'98 STS Decides to Turn on Battery Not Charging Light!

Drove car an hour earlier, got back in, started car, battery light on with DIC message stating battery not charging. Being dusk, sunlight rapidly disappearing, decided to check codes to find P1189, P1637, and P1638, along with battery voltage at 11.2. Researched the codes, does sound good, more like almost certain the alternator has taken retirement. Strange is that, all lighting, interior and exterior seem bright as can be, car starts right up.

Any recommendations on what to search for, other than what the codes are saying?

Next, what can I expect in the R&R department, sounds like a major job! What components need to be removed (other than drive belt, wiring, fastening bolts) to get that critter out and back in. Other threads talk about radiator, fans and condenser... Dang, thanks GM engineers?

Thanks guys for all your support,

    Timmy C

No need to remove anything but the belt and the wires. The alternator comes out trough the bottom, there is a small panel just for that. You can remove the right side fan (is very easy) and you get to see it better.
Nobody said it will be easy though...has to be turned many times until you find the correct position it will come out trough that small opening.
