Do keyless entry fobs stop working without any cause?

I have had a bunch of cooling system work done on my 94 Seville (new radiator/new water pump/new thermostat) The heads may still be an issue. After several overheats my keyless entry just stopped responding. I replaced the battery (2032) but to no avail. The service manager at the Caddy dealership felt it just needed reprogramming because he tested it and saw some responding on some gizmo he had. Is it common for the fob to need reprogramming out of nowhere? or am I looking at a bad receiver on the Seville somewhere? Did the overheating create the issue or maybe the repairs to the cooling system??

Thanks in advance. I ordered a new fob off eBay to be safe (20.00 vs. 135.00 at dealer) and need to program that when I get it. Lastly is the programming on a 94 the wire shorting method?

    No.

    Definitely not.

Since you already replaced the battery, you might try cleaning the key pad contacts (inside). Also inspect the battery contact solder connections. I had one that came loose and needed to be resoldered once.

    Have a look >>>here<<<
But that in case only one of the key fobs is not working.
At least for the '96-'97 there is a resync procedure (press simultaneously don't remember what key fob buttons).
Also you can reprogram the key fobs (your year should not need any special tool).
But I would look for fuses and power/data to the RFA module first if both key fobs are not working.

Hi Ranger and thank you. Always great to get your input.

I did clean the contacts. Do I need to add some sort of conductor fluid? The part that puzzles me is that the service tech tested the fob with a gizmo and it was responding. Did I maybe do something to the receiver in the trunk? We did have a bunch of luggage in there during our overheating adventure.

    No fluid necessary.

If it was tested and is responding, then the fob is not the problem. It must be on the receiving end. Pull the DTC's. Post them and their definitions. There may be a clue there.

Look for NO RFA data mainly.
Most likely his RFA is getting no power or data.

Re: Do keyless entry fobs stop working without any cause?

Thanks guys. I will try to pull the DTC codes. If it is a bad RFA where is that located in a 94 Seville?

    ----------

The codes I pulled seem to only point to the overheating I recently experienced (A037 History and A050 History) and a long standing suspension warning (S036 History, S043 History, S044 History and S061H) that I ignore because I heard the suspension repair is too expensive for the results.

Is there a step I can do to ferret out the RFA or should I just try to reprogram my remote fob?

I also have a code A012 current. Low side temp sensor. Must be the recent overheating?

No, that's an A/C system code.

RFA rear electronics bay (behind the rear seat backrest).
Have you seen RFA NO DATA or RFA NO CODES?

Re: Do keyless entry fobs stop working without any cause?

Thanks N*Caddy. I have not tried reprogramming which is the only place I would see any kind of reference to RFA. I gather in 1994 the RFA code is not part of the sequence. The reason is that I only have one remote and so I am waiting for the new remote off eBay so that I can program both together. I would like to try to reprogram this old remote and see is RFA is a problem but the programming instructions say do both remotes together. Is that a big issue to program the one remote alone and then add another remote next week next week?

Not sure about OBDI cars but in OBDII cars both remotes must be programmed in the same time.
You can program one remote as both no 1 and no 2 remotes.

But again that is OBDII, somebody with knowledge of OBDI cars may chime in.

Re: Do keyless entry fobs stop working without any cause?

Yes this is OBDI. There is no RFA showing up in the sequence of systems(only vehicle systems PCM, IPC, ACP, SIR, TCS, RSS show up) when in diagnostic mode. That's a mystery because I don't know how to test RFA. Any suggestions?

Re: Do keyless entry fobs stop working without any cause?

Probably your RFA has no power or no data.
It only has 3 wires, 2 are power and 1 is data, should be pretty easy to diagnose.

Re: Do keyless entry fobs stop working without any cause?

Thanks N*Caddy. I tried to ground the single wire off of the trunk locking mechanism as that seems to be where a 1994 gets reprogrammed. When I tried grounding there was no door lock and unlock as expected. I guess this meaqns the RFA is shot.
So if the grounding is done at the rear lower trunk where exactly is the RFA module relative to the trunk locking gizmo. It sure would be helful to have the RFA right there too. Secondly is there a part no. for the 94 RFA module? I probably need to buy one.
