1996 ETC noise in engine compartment.

Hi Everyone, starting getting a chirping sound at idle from the front of the engine, I tried to isolate the sound and it sounded like the serpentine belt, so replaced it, checked the pully and turned several units with the belt off and they seemed to be ok. installed the new belt, the noise is still there?. I will have to put the car on my ramps and maybe the A/C compressor front bearing is the culprit. the niise is there off idle and with the A/C on or off. has this A/C comp been a problem for anyone else, this noise starts out as a chirp then at times sounds like a squeel and then a rattle. before I repl the belt, I took the tension off the idler pully as the engin was running to eliminate that pully, and the noise was still there. I Am thinkink the A/c Comp? Any imput Thanks Tony . THe engine mileage is 109,000 miles.

Check the tensioner and idler pulley bearings.

run the car with no belt and see if the noise is still there. if not then you got bearing noise from one or multiple pulleys or misaligned pulleys

if you remove serp belt, than NONE of the accessories is now driven so you should get no noise. how can a non-driven accessory make noise? you release tension from serp belt to verify that ONE of the accessories IS making noise.

Re: 1996 ETC noise in engine compartment.

Is the noise coming from the accessory drive (front) end of the engine, or the water pump drive (rear) end of the engine ? If that water pump drive belt tensioner begins to fail, it makes some pretty nasty noises.

......... and the A/C compressor clutch has a ball bearing - when that goes it also sounds awful, but the clutch can be replaced separately from the compressor itself.

Thanks all, for Your responces, I did mention I used the slot on the belt tensioner bkt to relax the tension on the pully, the noise was still there, the noise lessens quite a bit when I accelerate the engine in the park possition, then the noise returns as the engine returns to an idle, at times it sounds like a noise the power steering pump makes when it is running very low on p/s fluid, but the noise doesn,t sound like it is comming from the pump, I am just putting a long screw driver to listen on different areas to try to pinpoint the sound, sometimes sound travels and could You could miss diagnos. I did replace the waterpump pully, tensioner, and belt 2 yrs ago , I will re check that again , Thanks Tony.

If the noise do not go away when you loosen belt tension enough to allow the belt to stop moving, the noise is not associated with any of the belt drive components.
