    Ac compressor not engsging sometimes

[QUOTE="CadillacEtc"]I have a 2000 Seville sts. Ac has been evacuated and recharged. Strange thing is it works perfect and cycles normal. Somedays lately I put on the ac and the compressor won't engage at all and the only way to get it to turn on is to the race the motor to 3000 rpms twice then it works fine. Had the freon on the scale it at the proper level. Doesn't do it all the time but is happening more frequent now. I understand the compressor is suppose to cycle but that's njot the case

    Any ideas ?

The clutch is electromagnetic and there should be about a .025 gap when disengaged. I think the actual specs are .020 - .030. You could try to blow out the gap with compressed air. You'd be surprised at the dust that will come out. If that doesn't help, I'd measure the gap. It's possible it could need an adjustment. All this is assuming of coarser that it is getting current when it's supposed to.

Revving the engine is simply coincidental. I'd bet you could also get it to engage if you pushed on the clutch face with a long wooden handle.

There is also the possibility that the clutch itself is failing.

Re: Ac compressor not engsging sometimes

I understand the compressor is suppose to cycle but that's njot the case
actually - the compressor is NOT supposed to cycle -
our cars use a "variable displacement compressor" -
rather than constantly cycling to maintain correct pressures and AC demands -
the actual movement of the pistons is adjusted -
    ----------------

check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes -

if you don't know how - go here and read the ENTIRE post -

    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...odes-dtcs.html

if you have any codes - post them here -
    ALONG WITH THEIR DEFINITIONS -
    ------------------------
Had the freon on the scale it at the proper level.
this is meaningless when it comes to diagnosing AC problems -

SOMETHING is causing the compressor to cycle -
    when it shouldn't -

    to diagnose AC problems -
you need to connect a quality set of guages -

then post BOTH the HIGH pressure readings -
and the LOW pressure readings -

along with the ambient - outside - air temp -

and the air discharge temp at the center AC vent -
with the temp set at 60* and a medium speed fan -
with the engine at a high idle - 1500 rpm -
