'97 SLS stalls

Remove this ad
I've only had the car a couple of weeks and my wife told me it stalled on her one day while driving it. The next day, it stalled on me. When I bought it, the car dealer filled it up and I didn't have any problems with that tank of gas. I filled up using Shell Premium (V-Power) and the car stalls every day or two...it just stalls but starts back up without any problems. I filled up again last night with Shell V-Power and it stalled on my way to work this morning.

Should I use mid-grade gas and not the Premium that's recommended?

Is it possible to pull codes after it stalls to see what might be happening?

Thanks for any help/advice.

Re: '97 SLS stalls

Just a follow up...

I took the car to the dealer since I have a 30 day/1,000 mile warranty...they ended up replacing the EGR valve and cleaning the throttle body (along with replacing the instrument cluster - it was dark in one area of the tach). I haven't driven it too much since I just picked it up this evening but hope that takes care of the stalling.

Re: '97 SLS stalls

EGR will cause stalling if it hangs open. It is rather easy to clean. That's probably all it needed rather than replacing but since it was under warranty who cares.

Gas was not your problem but be advised that the Northstar has a very efficient knock sensor system that will allow you to burn regular. If it detects spark knock it will retard the timing accordingly. I have been burning regular for about 3 years now and have noticed no ill effects either in milage or performance. If your gonna race it and want absolute peak performance stick with premium.
