    Hello All!

I'm having some issues with my 96 Eldorado and wa hoping to get some help/advice from any of you that may have seen this or know what the possible issue could be. It idles rough and the check engine light came on and began to blink. Here is the link to the in dash codes that I pulled. P0300 is the current code. I've looked it up an know its a misfire.

Re: 96 Cadillac Eldorado Blinking Check Engine Light

    Greetings!

The first thing I would check if I were you is the coil packs! I had this same issue and error code and I had a coil pack which had gone bad, replaced the coil pack, code disappeared and car runs as smooth as butter.

The one that I got was on ebay and was only about $10 with a lifetime warranty.

The code that it's throwing is a misfire code.

A blinking SES light means a misfire has been detected. Could be lots of things, plugs, wires, coil, ICM, dirty TB, bad injector.

    P0300 is the current code
Cadillac really dropped the ball regarding the P0300 code and the on-board scanner -
P0300 is a generic misfire code - and that is all out on-board scanner will show -

the ACTUAL fault code will list the particular cylinder misfiring -
but you need an external scanner for this -

    P0301 is a misfire on cylinder #1 - P0302 is a misfire on cylinder #2 -
    P0303 is a misfire on #3 - P0304 is #4 - etc -

autozone - or other big parts stores will check the codes for free -

once you know which cylinder is misfiring -
    diagnosis becomes MUCH easier -

Re: 96 Cadillac Eldorado Blinking Check Engine Light

My son has a 98 STS and one day saw the blinking light too. Check to see if all of your spark plugs or plug wires are properly plugged in. He had changed the plugs and didn't push one of the tubes for the plug wire all the way down into the hole and one of his cylinders wasn't firing. It registered as a misfire.

    Thanks all for your responses!

So I'm going to take it to Autozone today and get the actual p030X code to find out which cylinder is misfiring. Ill keep you all posted later on today.

There was no code given for a specific cylinder. Just the p0300 random misfire. Does any one have the information or a good link to go about checking each coil?

    Thanks

Use an upscale aftermarket scanner or go to a large car parts chain store. The onboard system will not show the faulty cylinder number......... don't understand why Dead Zone couldn't pinpoint the cylinder. There's a slim chance that your 1996 is one of the changeover mid-year models with a combination of OBD1 and OBD-II codes/systems........ not that that should make a lot of difference.

    SES = Emissions fault
    Blinking SES = Misfire detected

Get a known good coil from another car and swap them one at a time. If the misfire goes away, you'll know which coil is bad. Replace the borrowed coil and get a replacement for the bad one. They are very easy to swap out.

Okay if I was to do that how do I tell when bad coil has been replaced? With the check engine light instantly disappear?

Re: 96 Eldorado Blinking Check Engine Light

You tell when the misfire goes away. I assume you can feel it.

The check engine light will not instantly disappear. Unless you clear it manually, it will disappear and go into history after 3 ignition cycles with no misfire detected.

Thanks for sticking with me Ranger...

So should I replace each coil, run it through 3 cycles, and check for the light? I could also try an d find the exact cylinder misfire witg the better code reader and just replace both coils.

Re: 96 Eldorado Blinking Check Engine Light

    Both coils? You have 4.

If you can get a reader that will spit out the exact cylinder that would be the easiest way. My method is the alternative. Can you feel the misfire or is it just the SES light that brought it to your attention?

Right but each coil corresponds to 2 cylinders right? So if i find the bad cylinder then i guess i would only have to replace the one. But yeah I can definitely feel it slipping outside of the rough idle. Also I've noticed that my gas mileage has dropped a little bit.
