    Check Engine P0741 code

    I had p0741 code about a month ago. It came on after i had new tires put on. I cleared the
    code. Car is running fine seems to be shifting fine and locking up. Im leaving on an 1800 mile trip. It came back today. cleared it. Should i take it ??

    IF the P 0741 persists, with no accompanying P 1860 (TCC solenoid failure), then you'll see about a 150 rpm increase in your 4th gear highway cruise. That might cost you <1 mpg. If you are not in an emissions test state you can drive the car forever that way - but the SES light is bothersome. An intermittent 0741 says the TCC viscous clutch is on the way out. P 1860 says the activation solenoid is dead, and that's permanent TCC disable.

    The true fix is a new (locking) torque converter. $$$$.$$

    The test for P 0741 alone is to get to ~50 mph+, steady cruise speed, fairly level highway ...... while holding speed with your right foot, lightly touch the brake pedal with your left. IF TCC is engaged, as soon as you touch the brake pedal you'll see a 150 - 300 rpm increase on the tach. As soon as you release the brake peal the rpm should again drop slightly.

    there is no p1816. no emmision test. the light not a big deal. i just wanted t make sure i wasnt gonna be stuck on the road.
