My Moms 97 SLS recently (1-2 wks) started having trouble starting, as in 1-2 times, 3rd time a few boom, boom, boom, then start.
The rest of the day fine. Newish alternator and battery (within/1 yr). Garage kept, 75k miles, drive 30mph for 2 miles 3xwk, 50mph for 2 mi 3xwk. We're taking it on a short (250 mi round trip on interstate) tomorrow and want to know if it's safe.
Thank you for any help
It should be OK - the car has been subjected to the worst kind of driving - short hop, never fully warmed up. You'll probably notice more hiccups and bucks during the first 100 miles of the trip............ too bad it isn't longer - that engine NEEDS a run.
Clean, fresh oil and filter ?? Extra quart in the trunk, dipstick level at <=== ADD XXXXXXXXXX FULL ===== after 5 minutes draindown time. Recent air filter ?
See if you can find a 20 oz. bottle of Chevron TECHRON fuel system cleaner. Dump it in with a fill-up of Shell, Texaco, EXXON, Sunoco 91/93 octane gas.
Google "chevron techron" and "top tier gasoline" to find out why.
32 psi all around in the tires, wheel lug nuts (trim caps ???) torqued to 100 lb/ft in a star pattern. (Tires fairly new ?)
Thank you. EVERY time I've gone on this forum, people have said that this car needs to be driven HARD, not babied. Since I'm a "little lady" (yeah right),
mechanics have tried to take advantage of me. I learned a LONG time ago to do my homework, since my grandfather, uncle and best friends owned shops.
So that is why I'm doing my homework now (with your help, thank you) so when the "little lady" brings my car in and they tell me I need ?----?, I can tell them that, no, I don't. My favorite memory was back in the 70's and a shop owner said I needed a ?----? (forgive me, I don't remember what), BUT, my car didn't even have a ?----? and when I told him, sorry, that car doesn't even have that, the look on his face was worth $$$$$$$$$$$!!!. So, that is why I appreciate people
like you helping people like me to not be taken advantage of. Thank you.
Good to go ........ When the spirit moves you, make a decent scotch & water and settle down at the keyboard - Go way up ^^^ in the top black bar and study the entire Cadillac Technical Archive. Then read through the sticky posts (like just above this one) in any forum of interest - stickys are timeless info as well as just plain car nut basic stuff. If you're not into tools and oil find a local car club or car show group and see if that sort of social interaction might benefit your car knowledge (ALL gearheads are not knuckle-draggers a-la BigDaddy Roth - Google that).
Jump in and out of threads that pique your interest - You never know what tidbit you'll tuck away for tomorrow.
Thanks for the above info! I needed a laugh! Since this is my Moms car, I'm not that familiar w/Cadillacs. BUT, my cars are a 97 Lexus LS400 in La., and a 96
Acura 2.5 TL in Il. I LOVE cars! My 1st: Pontiac, Volvo, Saab, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Porsche, Bentley, Mitsubishi, Acura, etc. SO, I love cars.
Thanks for the help.
