Power steering not working in both directions at low speeds

    Hey Guys

Ive done a lot of research, and I cant seem to find anyone with a similar problem as mine... I see its common for the power steering to stop working in one direction, and usually its a hydraulic seal that goes bad... got it!

My situation is a little different, my power steering doesnt work in EITHER direction. It will work if i put the car in neutral and rev the gas tho. Seems to work fine at that point. If it is not given any gas, it does not work and the wheel is very hard to turn.

I am confused, I am trying to sell the car but it will be hard to sell when the power steering is not working in both directions, and I dont have any insight to give the potential buyer.

    I need some help, thanks!

    Tim

My steering wheel is usually hard to turn in either direction as well without my foot on the gas when I'm not moving. I just live with it, but if it's a cheap fix that I could do myself, it would be interesting to find out what it is.

Would it be safe to assume that you have checked the fluid level and it was/is OK?

Mine was pretty low at first, but it still covered the bottom of the reservoir.

Maybe it sucked in air and needs to be bled.

yes i did check the fluid, looked fine to me... which was a little depressing haha. i dont understand why it becomes easy to turn if im at a stop, put the car in neutral, and rev the engine a small amount. what would the explanation be behind that? when you rev these engines does it send air through the power steering line? or suck air out of the power steering line? the symptoms are obvious so i feel like i should be able to get it figured out rather easy, i just dont know anything about power steering lines

Sounds like a worn pump. It can't produce sufficient pressure at low RPMs.

I did have the same problem and replaced the pump with a remanufactured unit and it worked well for a week and symptoms returned then flushed the system well and problem solved. If you do change the pump be sure to change all the fluid.

i picked up a PS pump for 40 bucks at a junkyard, they said its pretty easy to install... and i dont need a pulley tool... any write ups or DIY on this install??? They said it was one bolt... literally, one bolt.

Re: Power steering not working in both directions at low speeds

You will need a pulley tool as there is no access hole in the pulley to get the bolts. I couldn't find a good write up myself but I will tell you that fuse box will be in your way so disconnect your battery. I'm sure the experts here will chime in for you.

Did they change design after 96? Pulley is not in way to remove 1 hold down bolt.

They must have as mine has 2 bolts at the bottom and there is no way to access them without removing the pulley.
