rear main seal, 01 ETC only 40K miles

Guys my wife's 01 40,000 mile ETC has been flawless and is still showroom clean. Took it over to a buddy of ours that we have known for 30 years. He is the Service Mgr. at a Toyota store. Took it in for an oil change, front end alignment, coolant change. Got the car home and oil is all over the floor. Took it back he put it up on a rack and said the rear main seal is leaking bad. If I was retired I would get a shop manual and get started, however that's not the case and recommended to take it to a Cadillac store. Is this something that you guys see> I can't believe that this just happen to happen??? That said another good friend of mine that builds race cars, race engines, etc. will confirm the diagnosis Friday. I'm praying maybe the o-ring on the distributor or am I dreaming??

Not that common. Sounds rather odd that it would suddenly start to leak oil that much, that fast, right after an oil change. Color me suspicious.

Has no distributor, hence no O ring.
Have your shop check the drain plug, and oil pressure sending unit switch.

It usually starts with some little wet spots around the halfcase/oil pan gasket area then when it accumulates enough, it'll start dripping a little. It will always be some drops, not oil all over the floor. I'm suspicious either.

Yes this car was dry until we took it in> No distributor-figures-bad me. I'm old school. The car was dry before we took it in...My wife talked to Jack-the Master Tech mentioned above and her told her about a technique of his heating baby oil until it smokes and getting it into the system and where it smokes goes through will tell the story>see what happens

If the leak is large enough to put oil all over the floor, it should be easy to tell from the outside, without any aid from some sort of smoke machine. Again, since the car was dry before oil change and suddenly wet, I'd look into incorrectly installed items or accidental spills.

Re: rear main seal, 01 ETC only 40K miles-the diagnosis in and it's not pretty

Jack did the smoke test and said the mid-case is leaking back by the rear main seal. That said I wish I had the time to take on this project, but the white pearl 43,000 ETC is going up for sale. Besides the repair needed on this car it's dam near flawless even the headlight covers look brand new. BUMMER

I'm not an expert, but this is the first I've heard of anyone's rear main seal "letting go" suddenly like that. I would get a second opinion.

    And this ^^^^^

And, when I'm retired, a rear main seal on a Northstar may be the LAST thing I would think about doing.

I read on this forum and on line that case half leaks on these early Northstars is unfortunately common. Are any of guys familiar with Carroll Cadillac. There ad says they specialize in Northstar repair and are opening a facility in Dallas where I live.

Look up CarrollCustomCadillac.com in Google. Tim Carroll eats Northstars for breakfast. You might also talk to Jake Wiebe at NorthstarPerformance.com - same type of engine builder.

robski, I smell a big rat. Even the Northstar does not suddenly develop radical oil leaks. The Toyota people screwed up something big-time. Exactly where is the leak coming from - exactly. You should be able to clean everything, drive a bit and locate the leak immediately.

One possibility could be the oil pressure sending switch - the drips would be under the leftish side of the radiator, looking at the car from the grille emblem. Simple, cheap fix. Same for a possible loose oil filter adapter casting.

Pictures of all this in my albums - the Community tab, Albums, the red Seville - 2 albums, 6 pages of stuff for your engine.

Tim Carroll worked on my Caddy, it was unfortunate to see him move, but i wouldnt trust anyone else with my car. I was his site admin and might be doing so again, currently i help manage the facebook page for CCC. Now that hes down in Texas im going to be my car's specialist

Re: case half leak all of a sudden on a 01 ETC only 43K miles???

Submariner409 I agree something is NOT right. When Jack did the smoke test he said he could positively identify if it was a half case leak or not, he said he could not get up in where he needed to be. I cannot believe that the car was BONE DRY underneath before we took it over for an oil change. The Northstar has never overheated, still starts instantly. It could be very possible one of my buddie's employees screwed something up and will not admit it. I have called Tim Carroll and only got to a VM and no return calls-503-895-2124. In the meantime I bought the wife a new Challenger pick it up next Wednesday. Vencentm-Tim's ad on line says he will have both locations but again no one picks up the phone or returns calls
