Re: 2003 Seville STS very bouncy???

The only air component is the rear leveling system...The shocks have bladders that fill up when extra weight is added to the rear seat or trunk.

You can test this system by starting the car, opening the trunk, and sitting on the trunk lip...After a few seconds you should hear the compressor kick in and feel the rear rising, once you hop off you should hear the air being released and notice the rear dropping slightly.

If it's bouncy I would inspect the shocks for leaking fluid...All 03 STS's are equipped with magnetic ride control struts/shocks...If they're leaking that fluid they're shot and need replacing...Get ready for some sticker shock!

    do the bounce test -
go to the rear - easier if you open the trunk -
put your knee on the trunk ledge -
and bounce the rear up and down several times -

when you stop bouncing - the car should stop also -
if it continues to bounce - either the rear shocks are shot -
or they are malfunctioning - or the control module is defective -

you DO have Electronic Level Control in the rear -
it is a system that utilizes air bladders built into the rear shocks -
to maintains proper ride height -
regardless of the weight in the back seat and/or trunk -

the ELC system has absolutely NOTHING to do with it being "bouncy" -
it simply prevents the rear end from sagging with a heavy load in the rear -

that being said - the rear shocks COULD be worn out - or defective -

your STS has a very unique - read VERY EXPENSIVE - suspension system -
    FE3 / F55 -

the rear shocks are - with the best prices -
    ACDelco 580323 RIGHT - $579 - with free shipping -

    ACDelco 580325 LEFT - $522 - with free shipping -

There is no bypass for F55 cars.

Yep - The entire car and drivetrain is tuned for the F55 Magnetic Ride Control system. Our cars were the test mules for the later Corvette and Ferrari Lord/DELPHI systems - and those systems are now in performance Cadillacs across the line.

The 2003 STS listed for about $55,000, and that's where the maintenance costs will fall - very, very few workarounds.

There is NO "air suspension" - the rear shocks also help control rear ride height changes due to extra weight in the trunk and back seat.

Look on the RPO sticker under the spare tire cover............. F55

F55 began on 01-15-2002 and ended in 06-2003 when the last STS rolled off the Seville lines in Hamtramck.

Your STS is a F55 MRC car. No doubt.

There is NO aftermarket for the Magneride shocks. You can only purchase them from GM. Check eBay as they have some good deals from time to time.

Obviously your parts shopping is driven by price. Not an unreasonable position to take with a soon to be 14 year old car.

You can cheap out and restore a non-bouncy ride by installing struts and or shocks designated as "NON-ELECT" by Monroe and possibly Gabriel. In other words, parts that are intended as aftermarket substitutes for a 1998 to 2004 Seville SLS model that did not come from the factory with either F45 or F55 suspension. And you have not mentioned if your RPO sticker indicates F55.

Since you have no trouble codes or messages (post #1), we can assume the struts and or shocks are simply worn out due to age or miles or some combination of both.

Narrow the failed parts possibilities down a little. Is the front end bouncing too often after travelling over a bump/dip in the pavement?
    Or only the rear end?
    Or both?

Just know that installing NON-ELECT struts or shocks on your STS will not restore all the gee-whiz functionality to your suspension. But it will dampen the annoying and potentially dangerous bouncing. However, you will see the SERVICE SUSPENSION SYSTEM message at every engine start cycle unless you install resistors to simulate the presence of the electronic portion of the strut or shock.

The message can be defeated (popular 'opinions' are not technically accurate) if it becomes too much of nuisance to deal with.
