01 ETC changing the coolant procedure and recommendations

Guys my ETC has only 39k miles, most of the miles have occurred only over the past 18 months the wife went back to work, other wise the car only first saw rain only a few times!. New on the site and I have decided to change the coolant. All though I wrench and build classic muscle and pro-touring cars, I have never touched this car. What is the best procedure, drains, do you recommend a flush? What modern coolant is the best? Never been changed it ,car runs great just think it's time.

Drain it via the petcock on the driver side of the radiator, drop the splash shield. Refill with whatever came out, if it's orange, refill with Dex-cool 50/50. No need to flush.

FYI, you will not get all the coolant out of the system. When you refill it, rev the engine to 3K and hold it for a minute to purge the air. Top it off and cap it up. Check the level again after the next drive or two (after cool down). Top off as necessary.

Thanks I will get it done this weekend, wife came home from work today and mentioned the temp gauge moved sightly from the norm-in the middle to just a very little bit to the right-warmer side. Thanks

robski - You mean the temp gauge actually MOVED ??? Horrors !!!

You need to read the cooling and temp gauge stickys in the Engines: Northstar Performance forum as well as the entire Cadillac Technical Archive way up ^^^ in the black bar.

Why ? To learn why, when, and how the cooling fans work, the temp gauge actually moves, and what the actual symptoms of real cooling system problems are.

In your car it is perfectly normal, in warm/hot weather, to see the temp gauge needle move to almost the first tick past 12 o'clock.
