    Charging system problems, need opinions

    Greets,

Some rain today, first trip no problem, second trip the same. Third trip...first I get a message saying the charging system is too high, followed by the abs & traction lights coming on followed by the the gear indicator lights flashing followed by the message battery not charging. Turned it off, turned it back on and no problem. Put it in gear and same problem first its up around 16volts then back to down to 12, turn anything on and it drops lower. Codes set were PCM P0563, IPC B1911 B1982 U1255, ACM B1982, TCS C1237 & PZM B1982. All of them refer to high voltage problems with the exception of two of the IPC codes - U1255 (Class 2 Init error) & B1911 (Generator L-Terminal problem). At this point it seems to have stopped over charging but is not charging at all. So do I need a new generator/alternator or does it sound more like a ground/short issue?

Generator L terminal problem. Did you look at the alternator terminals? Are they secure? 16 volts can damage other controls so fix it right away. If you cannt, then have it towed to a shop.

Oh I am trying to fix it, but getting that gen/alt out of the car is a real head scratcher. Service manual says all I need to do is loosen the rear bracket (hah) and roatate the alt. to get it out. Let me tell you right now that is a fairy tale. What needs to be done apparently is remove the radiator and the fans.... just to get a frickin alternator out. Worst car I've ever owned hands down up or sideways.

Remove the fans then it'll be much easier. No need to remove the radiator

Removed the fans and still no go, had to remove the rad and don'tcha know my particular vehicle doesn't have oil cooler lines but a second rad just for that purpose tucked behind the first rad so had to seperate them to get the 1st rad out once it was out had to slide the alt along the bottom from left to right side to get it out over by where the air filter sits (pain in the butt to say the least) About the only positive thing in all this is all the bolts came out easily, no breaks no strips...course I still have to put it all back together again (whee)

The front "radiator" is the A/C condenser, the thicker one behind it is the radiator.

I know about the condenser, but on my car there is another one in there. Possibly someone modified it? I could tell while taking it apart I wasn't the first person in there, so who knows. Anyways that female dog is out and in the end thats all the counts. (still F'ing hate working on this car tho)

Smaller radiator in front of the condenser? Power steering fluid cooler maybe?

I always did these from the bottom.
    Either way, no fun.

I was fortunate enough to have my a/c compressor and the alternator go out at the same time in my Deville. Even with the a/c compressor removed, it was still a tight fit with just the front end supported with jackstands.

Re: Charging system problems, need opinions

The alternator is supposed to come down the bottom. There is a small panel bolted on the subframe directly bellow the alternator. Removing the one fan is not helping much (other than seeing better what you need to remove) however since is so easy to remove why not.
If you spin the alternator eventually you will find that one position is meant to come down that special opening.
I am not sure but it seems I remember the top bolt is not suppose to be remove all the way (I mean there is not enough clearance). You unscrew it enough to release the alternator to drop a bit, then you can slide the bolt out.
