    -----------------------------------
what you need is a STRUT SPRING COMPRESSOR -
a dedicated tool for just that purpose -

    there are several designs -
are you planning on buying - renting - borrowing -

    google "STRUT SPRING COMPRESSOR" -
to see all the different designs

the elcheapos are a threaded rod with hooks on each side -
we called these SUICIDE CLAMPS -

    a "hot-shot-mechanic" I worked with 35 years ago
didn't show the "proper respect" to these dangerous tools -
the clamps slipped - the fully compressed spring shot up from the floor -
and hit the "hot-shot" in the chest -
it didn't kill him - but he was out for a couple weeks with cracked ribs -

to this day - I bet he still has a circle imprinted in his chest -

    at my shop - I had a wall-mounted - pneumatic unit - 100% safe -
    I used to charge $20
when DIYers brought in the old strut assemblies and new struts -
it took about 10 minutes each to do -
I made money - they were safe - and it was fast -

might be worth calling around to see if anyone will do this -
shops - possibly large auto parts stores with machine shops -

    ------------------------------

a little more "food for thought" -

here is the MINUMUM tool I would use -
    $69

Pep Boys has a decent "suicide clamp", with locking slide pins to lock the coils into the hooks.

I'd still recommend finding a shop to do it for you, or spending a bit more money on the tool.

I borrowed one like this from Autozone to do my STS a couple months ago. Just have a good vice to hold the strut.

Thanks for the replies ive rethought the use of suicide clamps and will seek out a safer tool. I dont think you want to cheap out on this item!
