Looking to pick up a 2004 SLS. Former Deville owner

I recently sold my 1993 Deville..LOVED the car but i got a good offer and parted with it. So i see this really nice 2004 Seville SLS and being a former 4.9 owner...I have been scared off by horror stories of head gasket failures in N* engines, despite them being terrific in every other way. But this particular Seville is nice and just over 100k on it.

So i do a little online research and i am to understand that GM improved the N* issues with head gaskets by 2004.

So my question is : "Is it true the later N* engines are a little further removed from being prone to head gasket failure" ?

Thanks and anything else i need to know?

What horror stories ?? Engines break, engines wear out, engines develop leaking gaskets here and there. (Not that it's any fun when it's YOUR engine ........)

It's all documented in the sticky posts at the top of the Engines: Northstar Performance threads page.

Member since 2006 ?? You should have all your answers already answered. (Yes, it's true.)

Yes. GM lengthened the head bolts in 2000 and went to a coarser thread pitch in '04. While there are no guarantees in life, reports of '04 HG failures are pretty rare.

Who has SLS for sale? Dealer or private party? Friend? Relative? Info on former owner may be interesting but no big deal

Just curious, but since the STS was discontinued in 03, did they add any of the STS options to the 04 SLS?

At some point, fog lights, and body color grille became available on the SLS. Not sure what year.

You could option some stuff from 2000-on, but I don't know the details or numbers of the stock floorplan trim packages - there were 3 (??) trim levels for STS. About the only way to tell would be to find a 2004 SLS and plug the VIN into www.compnine.com - IF they still add the entire SLS RPO list AFTER the build list for the VIN entered.

Nuts - Looks like CompNine has closed the one-time-free decoder entry.
