    4t65e trans

some devilles came with the 4t60e which is pretty close to the 65. my 99 grand prix wont shift from 2-3. i can keeping accelerating and hit about 45mph than it will shift into OD. if i cruise at 55mph or so and punch it, it willl downshift into 3rd and stay there as long as i give it 2/3 gas. once i let off the gas it goes back to OD. so, no 3rd on upshift but i can make it go into 3rd on the downshift. so 3rd gear is THERE. i have a cel for emissions stuff. had it on/off for years. comes and goes. have not checked recent codes. not even sure if a cheap code reader will pickup and trans codes. ya i know. 99gt. 150k miles. time for rebuild.

This problem defies all logic. Rare, but PCM may not be commanding 3rd.
Both shift solenoids are off in 3rd gear & 3rd clutch pack engagement is necessary for 4th.
Make sure the car is starting in 1st. Could be going 2-3-4 or even 1-3-4.
The 1-2 valve is known for sticking & 2nd clutch for burning.
Screens fall out of the valvebody plate & jam valves but shouldn't work at times.
Trans throws PCM codes which scanner will read. Should have some gear ratio error code.

Pretty sure it's starting in 1st gear. I can feel the 1-2 shift at 15mph or so? Keep accelerating and tach will hit 4k or so and I usually have to lift to make it shift and tach drops to 3k for a sec and than drops to 2k. At this time I am going 45-50 mph? I can cruise at 50mph in OD all day. And if I leave shifter in 3, it will not shift into 3rd at 45mph even if I lift off the gas. It's gotta be 4.

    Check for codes.
Then, pull the top connector. That will put it in 3rd. If it slips at 40, 3rd clutch is N/G.
Several codes will set after connector removal, so check codes first.

    ----------

If 3rd is slipping, the only thing you can try without dismantling is changing the accumulator seals and/or pistons located in the lower pan.

pull top connector? so trans will default to 3rd? right now, it will not stay in 3rd at light throttle. during a "passing gear" test, it is accelerating of course so its hard to tell if it is slipping. car seems to pull fine in 3rd but with 3/4 throttle, its hard to tell.

If you pull the connector & can't make it up to 40, then it's probably done.

I'm havin' a hard time understanding how you have a good 4th with a bad 3rd.

bought car 6 yrs ago. seller said the PCS was borderline. they had it checked out and tech said the pressure/time number was right at the edge of ok. sometimes has a 1-2 and 2-3 noticeable shift. sort of like a worn motor mount or trans mount. you can feel it shift. now, the 1-2 shift is more noticeable. could the PCS be the reason it wont go into 3 now?

2 solenoids. 1 is referred to as (1-2,3-4) and the 2nd is (2-3)? that sounds like a good candidate?

    Re: 4t65e trans

    In 1st, both 1 & 2 are on.
    2nd, 1 is off & 2 is on.
    3rd, 1 & 2 are both off.
    4th, 1 comes back on & 2 stays off.
Thats how 4 gears are achieved with 2 solenoids.
The only way a bad #2 sol would kill 3rd is if it were stuck on.
If it were stuck on, it would go to 1st when 4th is commanded.

If you pull the connector it will also max out the pressure.
If it holds 3rd when unplugged, it could indicate an accumulator leak. (easy fix)
If it doesn't, bad clutch pack. (not easy fix)

Car really will lug if u start in 3rd? Obviously something u would only do as a test. And u should not have tc lockup than? As if it makes any difference. Is it true my 99 trans is 1 yr specific? Can't use 98 or 2k or newer? Will an olds intrigue, 99 work? Regal?

Yours should be a 9BCB with a FLQB converter.
    You may also use a 0BCB, 1BCB or 2BCB ('99-02) with a FLQB TC.
Tag can be found by the diff facing toward the rear of the car.
Other ones may have different chain sprockets, diffs & TC's.
Of course, I recommend fixing yours.

Read a bit about shift kits. Seems removing accum assy is fairly easy. The link between weak or failing pcs and putting shift kit on is interesting. Am curious to see if 2 of the accum tubes is loose? Probably not. Gotta get car from kid

The hole in the acc piston where the pin rides also wears out.
Worth a look, but don't get overly happy.

Dropped Pan, took off accum. O-rings are fine. Shaft is tight. Piston looks good, cyl walls are smooth. Changed fluid. Drives same
