My windshield wipers started going out a few weeks ago. Sometimes they would come on and sometimes not. I had to turn the wipers on high and they would start up. It seems as if something was binding the arms because the motor would run but the arms wouldn't move. The wiper fluid would still work also.
I took the old wiper transmission off and it doesn't look like anything is loose. I got a replacement transmission and wiper motor at the junk yard today just in case I need a motor. Should I replace the motor too, or just put the new transmission in first with the old motor to see if that solves the problem?
I assume that the motor is still good since it still runs when you turn the switch. Since I removed the assembly I might as well replace it with what I bought. The old one is rusty and the replacement assembly looks new. I just didn't want to put it all back together and find that the wiped motor was the culprit.
Well it turned out to be the wiper motor that was bad after all. Luckily I found one at the scrap yard from a 98 Eldorado and everything works perfect again. I would like to punch the person in the face that designed these cars under the hood, everything is hard to reach and get to. If you have big hands its nearly impossible to remove and install the wiper arm assembly, I got several cuts and bruises. Finally took it to a shop and they charged $110 to put the motor in and transmission assembly.
