Wanting to buy 99 STS had scary issue upon start up..

So I went to check out this 99 Seville STS today. It has 112,000 miles. It looks nice overall good clean interior, didn't notice any leaks top or bottom of engine, oil level was good, didn't smell burnt or like gas look too thin or dark. Neither did trans fluid. Then the coolant, it was green, shouldn't a 99 have dexcool? Anyways it was dirty, now I don't think it was oil, I got a good bit of it in my hand smelled it etc. But its a brownish color first thought was it was some kind of bars leak or something. Anyways now I start it, it starts right up no problem but it shakes and hovers right around 500rpms I give it some gas and it revs right up as it should then stutters some more. After about a minute it goes up to 700 and levels off and idles fine. I got back behind it, no smoke, no sweet smell. Anyways tell me its not a head gasket hahaha. Oh the asking price is 4800

For 4800 it should be immaculate and under 100k miles IMO.
Pull the codes as described in sticky aty top of forum.

It will post codes even with no CEL? It is in really nice condition, I don't plan on paying more than 4200 for it.

Only emissions related faults set cell off, other codes are stored but do not set light off.

Re: Wanting to buy 99 STS had scary issue upon start up..

Several months after mine started to go (it was a slow decline), it would idle rough on a cold start, then smooth out after it started to warm up. I figured that antifreeze was seeping into the cylinders, when the engine was hot, due to the internal pressure. I could prevent it by carefully/partially opening the cap on the surge tank after I got to where I was going, just enough to hear it hiss. After several minutes it would stop hissing and I would tighten the cap. After it got to the point where that know longer worked, I parked it until I can get time and equipment to do repairs, or contact Rippy and check their price...

Mine also didn't set off codes on the instrument console, but as I recall, it did set some individual cylinder misfire codes on a PC/USB scanner that I have. I figure that those were the cylinders that were getting soaked as they were all on the same head.

The Northstar uses a "camel mode" upon loss of cooling/coolant. It was designed to run, at reduced power, for 50 miles with NO coolant in the engine. The reason the cars are for sale is either cost/mechanics of water pump drive replacement or blown head gaskets. A simple overheat condition will not damage the engine - driving for a few days with no coolant flow would.

The shaky startup and idle quality is the scary - not good signs - part.

Know that the 1999 is the worst N* model year for head bolt hole failure. (unscientific poll in Engines forum) If you're Northstar car-looking, one of these is a necessary part of your Pre-buy inspection kit. Necessary.

    Good choice.

A rough idle for a few seconds after a cold start is a HG symptom. Not a guarantee, but a possibility. Add to that the fact that it is a '99 and you have a real crap shoot on your hands. Like Dirty Harry once said, "Do ya feel lucky"?

Thanks for the input guys! I've been using this forum pretty regularly for about two years and I'm glad I finally joined it. I think ill get one of those lisle test kits for future use. The good news is the 4.5 in my Seville still runs like a top! So no hurry I guess.

You guys are making me anxious about my '99. I just put about $1500 in strut/shocks. It runs great though.

I would shy away from this one. As mentioned, it should run perfect for the price.

Is the "change oil" message on? Possible sign of recent overheating.
Put a cheap external scanner on it to see if it has been cleared lately.

If the monitor status circles over the code area are blinking, it has been cleared.
    No blink, not cleared lately.

Just proves the point that it is NOT just a Cadillac problem. My buddy also had to replace the HG's on his Subaru.

No need to steer clear. Just buy the right one.
