    Water pump pulley

I see 2 different 1996 caddys for sale. An Sts and deville concours. Both have about 100k miles and both sellers say there is an issue with the cam driven pulley being messed up. It's odd to see 2 almost identical issues on 2 different cars for sale at the same time. Both cars are listed at about $1k. Not that either has headgasket issues.

After 100K, it's not uncommon for the tensioner pulley to seize. Once that happens, it's fairly easy to melt the belt and pulley together.

    Re: Water pump pulley

It's not hard to fix (at least on my 98). I wouldn't be concerned about the problem in itself, but I would be a little worried about whether or not it was driven for an extended period of time without the water pump functioning.

Intake cam water pump drive pulley - metal hub, TIGHT press fit. Using the groove in the hub, a P/S pump pulley set and care pulls it off. A proper-sized metric bolt, nut, and stack of greased washers presses it back on, flush with the cam extension end.

There may still be a black plastic thread protector screwed into the cam end - that comes off with a Torx bit.

$1000 might be the dealer repair estimate. OR there might be more that they are not divulging.

If the cam extension is broken off, that shows very poor mechanical aptitude and no care. Leave the STS to some other fish. The effort required to break that cam spells disaster for OTHER left cylinder head and timing parts.
    RippyPartsDept and 98cadillac like this.

How in the world does one break the cam extension off when removing the pulley? I'd understand if they tried to use one of the pullers that grabs on the outside of the plastic pulley and broke the pulley, but breaking the cam extension?

The only thing I can think of is that they took a hammer to the pulley trying to knock it off, or perhaps used a pry bar.

It's not like that cam snout is fragile. I'd guess that breaking one would take some level of dedication.
