    Ignition Coil diagnostic

Is there any way to test an ignition coil? I have been getting misfire codes, I changed spark plugs & boots a few months back & it temporally fixed the rough start & idle but its back, I tried the local junkyards for an ignition coil but no luck, so I would have to buy a new one to test it & they cost about $200 which is too much to spend on a maybe

    Yes there are test procedures.
A factory service manual can be very handy

    Re: Ignition Coil diagnostic

Not really - the primary winding of each coil is connected to the ICM multi-pin connector in the coil cassette L-leg. You would need a circuit diagram of the connector to ohm out those windings. The secondaries each go from the coil tower to the cassette ground spring.

You might talk to Chris in parts at Rippy Cadillac over there >>>>>> or keep your eyes on RockAuto for a blowout on DELPHI cassettes.

The cylinder pinout order in this pic is for Bank 2 (left, front bank). Bank 1 (right, rear), in the same pin order, is 5,3,1,7.

Don't check resistances across the ICM itself - VOM voltage is too high for the internal circuits - it comes out with 2 screws and 2 (careful ......) snap clips. More pins way into the cassette recdeptacle. Both ICM's, as both cassettes, are identical.

Testing one of these coils is not as easy as the old single coil used with distributors.

You could use one of these, but they are not cheap either.

    Re: Ignition Coil diagnostic

    just to be clear -
any Northstar powered Deville - Seville - or Eldorado - even Olds Aurora -
that has the ignition cassette will work -
and the only difference between the front - gray - and rear - black coils is color -

if you still can't find one locally -
try Ebay - you can usually find them for around $75 -

Thanks for the help & suggestions, I got some diagnostic stuff I'm gonna try, first I need to see which cylinder(s) are misfiring, yes I did put in 8 brand new plugs not too long ago but I did have a top rad hose leak that sprayed coolant onto the ignition coil bolts above the plugs, also there is a very small crack along the plastic that surrounds the metal on the ignition coil that goes into bank 2,...now only if we could get 1 day without rain so I can tinker with it

If you have a specific cyl misfire code, you can switch coils to see if it moves to the other bank.

I don't know what they were thinkin' when they designed these 4 in 1 cassettes.

Do you mean to switch the back & front coils? Wow it's so simple I have no idea how I never thought of trying that lol, thanks & if the rain holds off tonight I will give that a try & hopefully this will narrow my issue down

^ Yeah. And like Bass said, the only difference is the color.

Rock auto is where I got mine. $80 for all 4.
Also I had a bad ignition control module. The coil packs sit on the icm. $200 for the icm.
Easiest way to find a bad coil pack is to swap them around. The bad on will show. Good luck

    Re: Ignition Coil diagnostic

cliff77, Your ignition system is VERY different from the 2000 and later systems. Absolutely NO resemblance. (For yours, Google "waste spark ignition")

Here's what the OP is fooling with - 2 per engine ...................

I took the car to get a full estimate on all things wrong, & they found the head gasket needs to be repaired got quoted up to $1800, they said normally they recommend not to bother but said at under 108K & the condition of my vehicle that its probably worth repairing.....any suggestions? I believe I am leaning towards getting it fixed because if I were to put $2500 into this car it will be in hopefully great condition for at least 3 more years, when in contrast I'm not going to find a very good car for under $3000

    Re: Ignition Coil diagnostic

We would need a LOT more proof that the head gaskets are bad from having only simple misfire codes .............. and, considering the PROPER work to prepare the block for new head bolts or studs, $1800 is about $600 - $1500 too low.

How much homework have you done in Engines, Northstar Performance - the stickys on cooling system operation and head gasket failures ???

I questioned how they determined it was the gadket & they said it was the misfire, coolant leak, & blue water test

    Re: Ignition Coil diagnostic

Maybe good info - but a real bummer for you.

If the rest of the car is in good to excellent condition, stud the engine. Where are you ?? (Upstate NY ??)
