    keyless remote for 1996ETC

I recently purchased the car and it didn't come with a remote so I purchased one, the parts guy informed me it was the right one to my car and options. The mechanic on duty couldn't get it to program. After reading thru the threads, I found a way to program it, followed all the steps, all the right letters came up, the number 99 and so forth. However, the remote would not program. I was told that a car could never have more than 2 remotes programmed , is this true? Could something else be wrong? If so, how do I overcome this hurdle? Thanks for any help.

    TRUE -
and remember - you DON"T "program" the remote to the car -
you actually "program" the car to recognize up to two remotes
