2001 STS will not start and rear light bulbs out

    Hi

I noticed that one of my lights were out on the Left side trunk light the 1157 Lamp. I had no Volts to light. Looking further I see that by the Licence Plate light socket one wire
was burnt. It is the Purple wire it has a Sleve over the wire and there seems to be a bump in middle of the wire. The hole sleve burnt up.What is that in line sleve for.there is also one on the left side around the Brown wire.
Can You Buy this and is it needed?

Now I try to start car and all lights work but motor does not start.

    Thank You
    Pete

    ----------

    Hi
I also see a Yelllow Strip going down the Sleve.

That "bump" is the taillamp resistor.
Are your brake lights staying on (due to a bad or misadjusted brake switch) causing it to burn & killing your battery?

Re: 2001 STS Will not start!

    Hi

    Thank You for your help.
I waited a hour and it started. Do not know why.

Yes ,i found out it is a 7.68 resistor . I will have to buy on e bay a used Center Tail Light section. nobody just has the wire harness.

I see that I had a 1157 lamp in whitch is 21w/5w ,should have a lower watt lamp a 1156 single element.

You had a dual element where a single belonged?
Guess it could cause the burn but I don't know about the no start.

Aren't the posts on the base that hold the bulb in different between 1156 and 1157.

Yea and they shouldn't lock in either but I've seen them forced in before and it's possible to make contact if the prong is wide enough.

The original bulb is an 1157 - dual filament - with only one filament used in the U.S. cars. (Same setup in my 2002 - I was very surprised to pull out two old-style bayonet-based bulbs when I changed them ALL in 2009.)

The 1157 has staggered bayonet posts because the filaments are of different wattages - thus the bulb must only fit/lock into the socket one way. Our new 3057/3157/3457 bulbs have snap-in bases with the filament wires staggered on the base - so no matter which way you snap them in, the filaments are always correct - grab one and scope it out..............

#1157 is the correct bulb - dual filament, dual socket (look in the socket). See my post .............

    FWIW:
    #3057 - stock bulb
    #3157 - brighter low filament
#3457 - brighter low and high filaments

......... not huge differences, but noticeable. Same progression with the 1157 series.

All 1998 to 2004 Sevilles left the factory with a #1157 bulb in that socket. Only export models to certain countries used the 21 W filament; domestic models do not use the 21 W filament connection.

As to the 7.68 Ohm resistor, that is used to match the brightness of that #1157 bulb to the brightness of the #194 bulb in the adjacent lamp position.

You "could" repair/patch your existing harness with some careful cutting and soldering. And install a 7.5 Ohm 10 W resistor from Radio Shack. If I were doing the repair, I would clamp the resistor to body metal to dissipate the heat.

The repair might not be 'pretty' but it will work and might cost $5.00 in parts compared to $??? for an entire trunk mounted lamp assembly just to get the harness.

    Hi

Thank You Everyone for all your help.

I bought a use wire harness on e bay . not bad $82.00 came with the hole section too.

I will buy the 1157 lamps. From what I read from you guys is that the lamp will only twist in one way.

    Thank You
    Pete

Re: 2001 STS Will not start!

The bayonet lugs on an 1157 are staggered - keyed - so the bulb only seats in the socket one way. An 1157 will not fit an 1156 socket and vice versa.

See Ranger's picture and look closely at the lug positioning.

Re: 2001 STS will not start and rear light bulbs out

    Hi
    Thank You.

I am safe to assume that the 5 watt filiment is what US cars use in the double filiment. To sum it up When I put in the 1157 lamp what filiment should light up the taller or shorter one?
    Thanks
    Pete
