    Spare tire modern replacement

Does anyone know if there are any spare tires being made today that will fit a '98 STS?
The original popped after 14 summers in Florida and I don't want to buy a tire that's 10+ years old.

I will assume your car has space saver. You can do a search for size of tire and there are replacements available IIRC but are costly. The rim should be the same until they changed the bolt spacing around 06. So you could pick a spare up from a Cadillac or Buick that was newer.

I seem to recall a brand new replacement, both rim and tire, being very inexpensive when I priced it.

    Re: Spare tire modern replacement

I priced it last year at Moore Cadillac in Richmond and the price was $100.00 for a brand new one.

I see no point in having a spare in the car because those spares suck and who wants more weight in there car? In my opinion. If i get a flat i'll just call a tow truck but $100 does not sound that bad for one.

Changing a tire takes less than 10 minutes, a tow truck can take a WHILE to get to you, and can cost $75/$100+ for just a few miles. Still worth having a spare.

Yeah that spare saved my ass the time my rear tire decided to pick up a nail and start shredding on the way back home. My BMW had a full size 5th alloy wheel as a spare so it's annoying that Cadillac couldn't do the same for their $50k car. Oh well.

I agree, why be at the mercy of the tow company's schedule?
Or...if it's the wife's car and she doesn't change the tire, AAA can change it for her and she can be on her way. No need to ride in a dirty tow truck.

Mine still looks like the day it was made. Still has the little rubber excess on the tread. I know there's some age, but for the little bit of use it might get, I would imagine a pristine spare from salvage would handle an emergency.

    Re: Spare tire modern replacement

We recently had a Discount Tire Executive at our Cad/LaSalle meeting in Tucson and he said that 10 years is about the limit and then they can look great and never have used but then when you change them they separate within a mile or two. My 02 Seville spare had the plies separate and the tire had never been out of the spare tire compartment. I wouldn't have known except that when it separated it was wedged in the compartment and I had to deflate the tire to get it out. At the time, Discount Tire had a special at about $60.

One of mine separated in trunk. On my PA it was maybe 5 yr old spare and lasted 3 miles at slow speed.
When I got my 97 it was the first thing that was chucked.
AAA is great, but I travel at night where the towns are few and far between so I keep full sized spares now.

The wheel size(bolt diameter) was the same until '05 if not newer. Do a google for cadillac wheel interchange. I would be willing to bet the spares are thes same size until the change.

All DTS rims will fit, as well as some CTS and STS rims. Tire sizes may differ though.
