    head gaskets - 2000 Seville

    hello-
    1st time poster
i've bought a 2000 seville with 128,000mi. had to do a coil pak and some other minor things. seems to run fine. my question is this; at any point can i feel that i've made it through the blown head gasket ordeal? at 128k did i get one that, perhaps, isn't going to blow gaskets or would i be smarter to feel that at 128k im getting closer everyday. got this car for my daughter who will be able to drive in a couple months. i don't want to be the reason she ends up on the side of the road!
any input would be greatly appreciated
    -dave

    Re: head gaskets

With that out of the way the HG issue pretty much boils down to the luck of the draw. There really is no mileage milestone that ensures you are in the clear, they go when they go. As long as the coolant system has been maintained during the life of the vehicle theoretiically it should be just fine. If it has been in the hands of someone that had coolant issues with it and let it overheat a few times then your chances increase. The aluminum block expands with the extreme heat, the more that happens the better the chances the head bolts will eventually let loose.

With that said I sold my 2001 STS with 233k on the clock, never had a problem with the HG. I did however have to have to the crossover gaskets replaced, that leak was discovered when the transmission was being replaced. All in all any FWD N* is susceptible to HG failure at any time as they all share the same design flaw unfortunately. I'm not saying they are ALL just ticking time bombs but the possibility is always there...

Good luck with yours though, they are fine pieces of automotive brilliance if taken care of!

For what it's worth... I thought mine might have had that fate at 128k however it was a very simple fix that got my baby running back to normal. Don't worry yourself to death over it and enjoy it. Welcome!

    Re: head gaskets

Headgasket issues seem much more common than they usually are. You'll hear about it on the forums and the mechanics but there are so many Northstar cars still on the road with no issues at all. Keep it maintained and the car will be fine. Oil leaks are ALOT more common than HG issues on these motors.

FWIW, my old '00 STS blew a headgasket at 54k miles. curtc's car went 233k miles with no HG trouble. Your mileage may vary.

    Re: head gaskets

As mentioned, you buy your ticket and take your chances. There is no predicting when or even if they will fail. That said, be advised that GM lengthened the head bolts in 2000 which greatly reduced the failure rate. The odds are in your favor with a 2000+.

Worst case scenario is that the HG's (threads) do fail. Even if that happens, it will not leaver her on the side of the road. HG's do not fail catastrophically. If it happens it will be a slow process of using coolant and running hot to eventually overheating, but it WILL warn you (her) well in advance.
