    Unhappy Trouble - 2000 STS P 0741 and P 0440

Pulled codes today and got P0440 and P0741. 440 indicates the wires are reversed on my O2 sensors (I've never had them worked on). 741 indicates torque converter clutch circuit performance or stuck off. Anybody know what this could mean ? I was going to drive down to the Ozarks in a couple weeks but I doubt now that I will be able to.

    Re: Trouble - 2000 STS P 0741 and P 0440

P 0440 is EVAP system malfunction. Any sort of air/vacuum leak from the gas cap to the fuel tank EVAP piping to the EVAP solenoid and piping at the right (rear) side of the throttlebody. Pictures and diagrams in my albums.

P 0741 will cost you 1.5 mpg and the engine will run at 2300 rpm at 60 mph. The TCC is stuck off, and P 0741 alone means a torque converter change. $1,800 to $4,000 depending on who, when, and where the job gets done.

    Re: Trouble - 2000 STS P 0741 and P 0440

You know why P 0741 is an emissions code ??? Because a stuck off TCC is a gas mileage factor - therefore it affects the amount of burned fuel, and is why a vehicle with a P 0741 will not pass state or federal emissions testing for either registration renewal or resale.

yeah my fuel tank needs to be dropped to fix the P0440. Hopefully the P0741 doesn't come back.

    Re: Trouble - 2000 STS P 0741 and P 0440

Why does the tank need to be dropped ? Have you narrowed the fault down to the fuel tank vent fitting ?? I ask because the tank pressure sensor can be replaced through the hatch in the trunk floor in your car - or is the fuel fill pipe rusted out ?

Based on 4T80E history, once the P 0741 begins to set it becomes more frequent, eventually becoming a permanent Current code.

Filler neck is rusted out she leaks a little when I fill up. I cleared the codes and the 741 hasn't come back, my dog rides with me alot and he steps on the traction control button, makes me wonder if that caused the transmission to throw that code.

    Re: Trouble - 2000 STS P 0741 and P 0440

I doubt engaging/disengaging the TC has anything do with your P0741 code...I got caught with that too in my 2001, the trans gave out completely at 220k. I would clear it out, wait a few days, and it would always come back, later it was ALWAYS there and if cleared would immediately return....It isn't something that absolutely NEEDS attention, unless of course you have an inspection due in your state (MN doesn't do inspections).

Dwight, I can't believe you have been here since '04, have over 2000 posts and are not familiar with P0741 as often as it has been discussed. Anyway, I can assure you that it will return and slowly become more and more frequent, but as mentioned you can ignore it and live with it if you don't mind clearing the code every other time you drive it (cheaper than the repair).

Yeah judging by the number of posts over the last couple years I would say I got a really good STS. I still wouldn't mind finding a 2003 though for the magna ride and DVD nav.

Hey so with the P0741 I drive almost all freeway 65mph+ and I never get the code but as soon as I take a regular back road 50-55 the CEL comes on its not used above 60 i take it?

    Re: Trouble - 2000 STS P 0741 and P 0440

TCC is used above ~43 mph, road load. In all cases. If your code/CEL comes and goes then you're in the beginning stages of torque converter viscous clutch failure.

There's a slim chance that "spirited driving" on a back road would engage/disengage TCC frequently and that might set a code/CEL.

TCC should stay engaged at any speed over ~43 at road cruise loads - and disengage for steep hills, passing situations, or if you casually touch the brake pedal with your left foot while holding speed with your right - in that case you'll see a ~300 rpm engine speed change.

.............. If your particular car question continues, please start a new thread - don't hijack someone else's thread.

The TCC is used at all speeds above 41 MPH. You will tend to see the code and SES light more on a slight incline with light throttle such as when the cruise is engaged.
