    Oil Level

Hi guys, Dumb question but thought it is best to ask the experts, I think after my last oil change, the guy put a little too much oil on my car, it is about 3 or 4 millimeters above max on the hash mark on the dipstick, will this harm the engine? should I have it drained a bit? thanks in advanced to any opinion.

    Re: Oil Level

sounds like someone dumped in 8 full quarts -

will it "HURT" anything - NO -

do you need to drain some out - again NO -

it will probably "burn off" that "extra" oil fairly quickly -
    -------------------
    the proper FULL mark -
is in the middle of the hash marks -

you are better off with 7 quarts - than 8 -

if I don't change the oil myself -
I tell the shop to just put 7 quarts in it -
rather than the 7.5 the book calls for -

    Re: Oil Level

Thank you basscatt, the car had a small oil leak before the oil change, now when I park it on down hill surfaces there are four oil drippings on the ground, but not on level surfaces, do you think that might be because of excessive oil?

Excess oil won't cause a leak.

    Re: Oil Level

Oil level is not THAT critical. If it where, the dipstick would not have an "acceptable range".

    Absolutely not.

    Re: Oil Level

I am just puzzled why the oil leak increased after the oil change. I had him go underneath and check out the oil filter, it was completely dry.

    Re: Oil Level

Maybe they spilled some oil when filling it and it is sitting in the lower air deflector.

    Re: Oil Level

It did burn off the excess oil, now it is at top of hash mark and the leaks stopped, if it gets to the bottom of the hash mark, do I add 1 quart or half a quart?

    Re: Oil Level

Let it get to here -

    <== ADD XXXXXXXXXX = OPERATING RANGE ====================00============================ ====O

and keep it there. Check every 2 weeks - forget the DIC message - do it correctly. Don't simply dump in "a quart or two". Pour in 8 ounces or so, let it settle and check the level. Once you become familiar with doing routine underhood checks, a simple oil level check will become second nature.

Your engine takes exactly 7.5 quarts of oil with filter - that amount will fill it to the level shown on my dipstick graphic ^^^.

Did you ever read the article on oil consumption up ^^^ in the Cadillac Technical Archive - way up in the top black bar ???

......... and in your original post on the oil change, 3 or 4 mm high is close to 3/8" to 1/4" overfilled. Too much.
