    Check Engine light inop

I have had my 2004 Seville SLS for about 6 weeks and I just noticed my Check Engine light is not working. It never comes on even during start up in the morning. When I run the DTC's and all the lights are supposed to light up it doesn't. I haven't pulled the cluster but I did pull one out of a Seville in the junk yard and the back is covered by a metal plate. I assume mine is the same so its not as simple as someone taking the bulb out. Reading the forum I found one other person with a similar problem and they were told to check the lighter fuse. I checked and mine is fine, so what next? Any ideas? I would really like it to work if only as an early warning of any problems.

    Re: Check Engine light inop

the bulbs are considered NON SERVICEABLE -
they are soldered directly onto the circuit board -

if you have soldering equipment and skills -
you could replace the bulbs - there are two for the SES light -

if you don't have the soldering equipment or skills -
the simplest solution would be to swap the entire cluster
with one that has similar mileage -
YES - the mileage IS stored in the cluster -

OR - to retain your mileage -
you could remove the "LIGHT BOARD" from a donor cluster -
and install it onto your cluster -

the clusters that WILL work in your car are from -
    2000 to 2004 Seville -
or 2000 to 2005 Deville DHS or DTS -

2 possibilities - Either the bulb/LED that illuminates the SES icon is dead or someone has disabled it (and just because it's a PITA to get to does NOT mean that some clown has not clipped the bulb out of circuit in order to sell the car).

Use the sticky post ^^^ "How to pull codes" to find out if there is really a system fault ...........

    Re: Check Engine light inop

There are no engine system faults that would set off the SES at this time. I guess it's time to pull the cluster. If anyone has any other suggestions before I pull it let me know.

When this was discussed before, didn't we find out that the CEL didn't illuminate when the key was turned, or when entering diagnostics mode?

I'd just unplug something that would set a P code (MAF, MAP sensor...), and see if it turned on then.

Should have a P0650 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit Malfunction.

Check brown/white wire #55 in the C1 connector on the PCM.

Disconnected the MAP Sensor and got code P0107 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage. No SES Light. I will try the other suggestions later and report back. Also I don't have the P0650 code.

IF the problem is simply a burned out SES bulb -
you will NOT get any codes for that -

P0650 will only set if the CIRCUIT that controls the light malfunctions -

which in the OP's case - further verifies that that his bulbs are burned out -

    from MoistCabbage -

the SES light SHOULD illuminate when the key is turned on -
it is part of the BULB CHECK -

the SES light DOES NOT illuminate when ENTERING diagnostic mode -
however - if there are emissions related codes that cause the SES light to be on -
the SES light COULD be on in diagnostic mode -
until the offending code is cleared - THEN the SES light will go out -

that should be proof enough for anyone -

P0107 IS an emissions code - and SHOULD have illuminated the SES light -

The bulb or led is part of the circuit. It goes from the PCM to the brown/white wire & directly to the light. If the brown/white wire is cut or the bulb is burnt/removed the PCM will sense no resistance and set the code.
I have seen some set the code & some not set the code. Don't know why.

    ----------

If the wire is not cut anywhere, create a code and put an external scanner on it and see if it says MIL requested before you start taking the cluster out.

You can also probe the brown/white wire with an LED test light at the PMC. Put the clamp to ground & turn the key on.

    Re: Check Engine light inop

I have read most of the previous posts on this topic in the forum. I am having the same problem with my 2002 STS. Failed emissions test in Dec because of no SES with key on. I thought the extremely cold weather at the time was a factor. No codes set. Doesn't illuminate when key turned on nor when commanded by Tech II. I went through GM diagnostic procedure to ground wire at PCM connector, to isolate circuit, still no SES. Yet 2 to 3 times a month the SES will start working normally for a day or two. Anyone have experience with a worn ignition switch, I'm wondering if this could be the problem. LEDs are supposed to be more reliable than miniature light bulbs from the past. Hate to pull the cluster to find that the LEDs are ok.
