Car Will Not Start - 2001 STS

I have a 2001 Seville STS that will not start. I've had a P0300 Engine Misfire Detected code for quite some time. Over time the car lost the ability to accelerate and performed really poorly. The car started cutting off on me when I stopped and when I turned corners. It got to the point where I had to keep my foot on the gas just to keep the car running. When it would cut off, I could turn it right back on. Eventually it was more and more difficult to get it started after cutting off until it cut off and would it start again.

It's now in my garage. I had the battery charged. I changed the fuel filter and checked the fuel pressure which was about 39 psi. I cleaned all the fuel injectors. I've checked the plugs on the front of the engine and they have oil on them. I cleaned them up a bit but haven't checked for spark yet.

    Three questions:
    1. How do I check for spark?
    2. How do I test the coil assembly?
    3. What else could be the issue?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

    P0300 is the only code?
Just a wild stab- unplug the mass air flow (MAF) & see if it starts. Easiest thing to try.

It's hard to check for spark with your coils. Unlikely both coils packs are bad. Usually loose 1 cylinder or 1 bank.

    Any blown fuses?

Here's the list of codes I have right now:

PCM P0300 C Engine Misfire Detected
PCM P0741 C TCC System Stuck Off
PCM P1415 C Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System Bank 1
PCM P1617 H Engine Oil Level Switch Circuit
PCM P1860 C TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Electrical
RSS C0620 C Right Front Position Sensor Malfunction

I should have included the full list up front. Sorry about that.

    Those aren't pointing to anything.
I've seen bad MAF's make engines run poorly & even not start without throwing a code.

No blown fuses. I'm putting the coil pack back in and I'll disconnect the MAF to see if it starts.

Disconnected the MAF and still nothing. It cranks but will not start.

    Have you checked the FPR?

Read the sticky post just above this one - "Acronyms" - you'll need the info from now on. Matter of fact, read all the stickys in any forum you visit - lots of basic info that is discussed endlessly ...............

I'm assuming the FPR is the Fuel Pressure Relay. I looked at it, and it looks fine, but I'm not sure how to check it. I have an ohm meter, but I don't know the procedure.

It should be noted that when I checked the fuel pressure, I also attached some shop air to the back side of a reservoir with gas in it. I had about 45 pounds of pressure and tried to start the car just to make sure it wasn't a pressure issue with the fuel and nothing.

When I cleaned the injectors, I pulled the Fuel Pressure Regulator as well and it was clean. Just in case you're referring to the regulator and not the relay.

    Re: Car Will Not Start

Fuel pressure Regulator - the domed thingy on the right rear of the fuel rail. With the engine off, remove the beauty cover and pull the vacuum line off the FPR. Any raw gas in the line or nipple is due to a failed regulator diaphragm. Simple hairpin clip removal. Local NAPA or large parts store, or talk to Chris in parts at Rippy Cadillac during EDT business hours.

No "Fuel Pressure Relay" in ^^^ "Acronyms".

Have you done anything to the factory sound system ?? Fooling with that usually opens a box of TheftLock gremlins.

I took the vacuum line off the regulator and it is bone dry!

No mods to the factory sound. I had enough issues with the battery and alt without that drama.

    Re: Car Will Not Start

just from my own personal observation -
a misfire is most often caused by lack of spark -
compared to lack of fuel -

if that follows true in your case -
you have been pumping raw gasoline into the cat converter -
ever since you got that first P0300 code - "for quite some time"

it is very possible - if not probable - that over time -
the catalytic converter has clogged up -
and THAT is causing the no-start condition -

you can try unbolting the cat - and move it slightly out of the way -
and see if it will start -

    Re: Car Will Not Start

Both coil packs share a common primary ground on the right rear of the engine.
Check for loose, corroded or broken.
If you can't find it, ground the "B" (black/white) wire on each connector.

All this sounds like an idle problem. When was the TB last cleaned?
