Brown gunk caked around radiator cap and filler neck

Unknown brown gunk collecting under radiator cap. Coolant in overflow tank is brown also. Coolant in radiator is somewhat green still. Just replaced most of the coolant system. Still haven't done the water pump. Radiator was replaced but is used. All coolant was drained (pumped out) and refilled. Only been a few weeks at most since new coolant was added.

Did you put any stop leak into the system at any point?

Update your profile with your vehicle year/engine.

Yeah, what year is it? Should it be using DexCool? It looks like it hasn't been changed very often.

It's older than '96, which is when DEX was introduced. It's irrelevant anyway, DEX is not required in any year/engine.

1989 Seville. Coolant is only a few weeks old. All coolant was pumped through the lower hose with the engine running until it was empty. Replaced radiator (used), hoses and thermostat. Refilled with entirely new coolant premix from autozone. Don't remember the type. Just regular antifreeze. The cheapest kind because the water pump is leaking and I need to replace it soon, so I'll be draining it again.

Again, did you add any stop leak products?

And there's no telling what was in the used radiator.

No stop leak used. I was going to, but after a bit of research on the internet decided not to. You think it could have been in the radiator that I got out of the junkyard?

Hard to tell from here, but it looks more like rust than sealant tab residue. The cooling system that the radiator came from was probably neglected.

Would you share your rationale of replacing a bad radiator with a junkyard radiator and not a new radiator? I've been collecting cars for years and I've never known of anyone replacing a bad radiator with a used junkyard radiator. Is this common?

Junkyard radiators are just as old as the one being replaced. Mileage is irrelevant, plastic gets brittle, aluminum corrodes. And there's no telling what was done (or not done) to the cooling system in the donor vehicle. Plus it's 50% more labor if you're pulling the part yourself.

Original radiator was cracked and I couldn't pinpoint the leak. It was just spewing from the front and steaming like crazy when full hot. I managed to get a junkyard replacement for $40, it looked decent. It's holding better than the original. Just too bad about the contamination.

    ...
Many times it will be, but quite a few times I've found parts that were replaced just before the car was wrecked/something major croaked.
