Do you know for sure that the contamination on that cap came from the junkyard radiator and not your engine? Either way, flush the cooling system and don't loose any sleep over it.

Sorry for a late bump repost. Flushed the entire system twice with straight tap water and refilled a third time with antifreeze. Cap is brand new. Coolant still turning brown and gunk still accumulating around filler neck and bottom of cap. Also of note, some shiny flakes like you would find in flaked paint and what appeared to some kind of grey silicone-looking material (but that's not what it was, still have no idea) came out with the flushing.

Proper cooling is critical without gunk is necessary for any engine but critical for a Northstar.

Flush the gunk out of the entire cooling system and replace the radiator with a new one. Radiators wear out and have to be replaced; gunk circulating around will shorten the life of all of the components of the cooling system and other problems will soon surface + you'll be replacing your used radiator soon.

Unfortunately, you'll eat the cost and labor to install a used radiator but you'll be much better off with new in the long run.

I don't know the best and least expensive source for a new radiator for a Northstar because I haven't had to replace mine yet but I'm sure that other posters will come in with recommendations.

Someone put some type of magic potion in the cooling system or, if it just started after installing the "new" radiator it's in the junk yard radiator you installed. I don't suppose it can hurt too much and since it has already been introduced to your cooling system, just flush out what you can and move on.
