Replacing Rear License plate bulbs w/o removing the rear panel on 2002 STS

The FSM says that the rear panel containing al of the lights must be removed in order to change the license plate bulbs. That requires removing the carpet inside the deck lid, etc. and usually you end up having to replace some of the push-in plastic plugs securing the carpet. Plus, you have to remove all ( it's not like that panel would fall off!) of those nuts on the bolts and un-clip the wires, etc.

That's fine when you replacing the main bulbs (turn signals, stoplights) and your plan is to replace all of the bulbs; but if you are just replacing a license plate bulb, you can do that by removing the phillips screws on each side of the lens and working the fixture out of the hole. If you have patience and work carefully, it can be done but not easily. Once I got it out and replaced the bulb, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get it back in without using a dremel on the edges. But finally I got it back in.

    You can do this!

Bottom line: Remove the entire license plate-lamp assembly. Easy job. Replace all the bulbs when you do - here's why.

You'll be surprised to find two #1157 bayonet base bulbs in there ...........

    Submariner,

I had originally intended to replace all of the bulbs. I had purchased all of the bulbs, removed the carpet from the inside of the deck lid, removed all of the nuts from the bolts, disconnected all of the electrical connections and the key lock cylinder. The panel came up slightly, but I couldn't get the panel to come up far enough to past the long bolts and release. What was I doing wrong? I was afraid that I would break something so I decided to see if I could just replace the license plate bulb that was burned out.
    Thanks in advance.

10 or 11 nut/washers on long studs ?? 10mm deepwell socket on a nutdriver handle. I had no problem lifting off the entire assembly and removing the bulb (twist lock) sockets.

Maybe that 11th nut is not obvious .......... if there is one - don't remember totally.......

I have the carpet back on the inside of the deck lid so I can't check it right now. But most importantly, from your post, there is no "secret" way to remove that light panel. So I'll go back look at it again and make sure I have everything loose. I could work it up about a 1/4" but that seemed to be about it. Thanks for your post and the information.
