    Shifter problem-99 STS

99 Seville STS-135,000 miles. Drove car this morning and everything was fine. Returned home and shifted into PARK but it shows it's still in REVERSE on the dash. Now it won't start because it shows it in REVERSE. Won't start in Neutral either. It won't do anything. Can't get codes because it thinks it's in REVERSE. Any suggestions?

Is the shift cable still connected (at both ends)?

I'll raise it up and check. But first I have to find a ride to a funeral. I'll get back with you Ranger.

The shift cable runs from the console through the firewall to the top of the transmission case - all checked with the car on the ground. (It's FWD .......)

Hmmmm............ IF the '99 still had the shift cable quadrant on top of the transmission, that might be it - down "behind" the driver's end of the engine - your gas pedal toes would point at it. OR ........ if the quadrant/switch is inside the transmission (Internal Mode Switch) then it takes a transmission pan drop and valve body removal. 2000 and later 4T80E sensor and switch diagram in my albums.

I found the problem! The shift cable under the hood to the top of the transmission case has a hard plastic tube that encircles the cable. The plastic tube is busted allowing the cable to buckle and will not quite push it to park. Temporarily fixed it by stabilizing it on a nearby bracket with zip ties. Where can I purchase a new shifter cable?
