Okay, new member and yes, I've searched and read hundreds of posts regarding navigation issues in the 2003 STS, however, I have yet to come across any that are my exact issue. Issue is this: Map Disc never gets read. Unit says that it is reading the disc, and yet it never completes reading the disc. Okay, "never" is not completely true, about 1 in 100 attempts, it will read the disc and function perfectly, but that is not cutting it for me. Also, the unit DOES play DVDs without much fuss, so my question is what could be wrong? I don't have another map disc and I don't want to spend big bucks to find out the disc is not the problem, besides as I said the disc does work on rare, very rare occasions. Are there some secret diagnostic codes that I can plug in to see what the issue is?
I appreciate any thoughts or guidance and thank you for your comments. Also, if I've placed this in the wrong place, please advise and I'll remedy that. Thanks again.
Thank you both for taking the time to give me some input. Glad to hear that the unit has two distinct systems for use, since I was pulling what is left of my hair out trying to figure out why it would read the DVD and yet not the map disc. I don't believe that the map disc is bad, because I was able to put another map disc in that I borrowed from a friend, and that didn't work either. I also threw the map disc into my computer dvd drive and it came up instantly with a variety of folders and such. So, I'm gonna zero in on a bad/dirty lens....thanks again for your input, and I'd of course still welcome additional thoughts/ideas.
Crazy thought, but let's say I've got a bad lens/drive, how can I go about replacing just the lens/drive without getting a second mortgage on the house? Can I simply replace the drive, like a computer, or is it more than that? Thanks.
1badcadsts: Thanks again for the information. I'm going to try a cleaning disc and then maybe blast 100 p.s.i. of air in there and see what happens. (Yeah, the 100 p.s.i. is a little macho, I'll pump in a little less than that to see if I can "blast" the lens clean before I pull out the unit to manually clean it.) Interestingly, today I've driven the car to and from work, and guess what.....the gps functioned perfectly both on the ride to work and from work. Probably knew I was talking smack about it behind its back.
Thanks again for your thoughts.
