Re: Outcome of dealer service visit today re: steering wheel shake

OK. I'm just so upset about all of this. I hope I can find someone to buy it, no dealership is interested, even the one I bought it from (non-GM). I hate selling privately, you never know who's driving the car, and I just heard a report on the news that someone who went on a road test with someone who contacted them has not been seen since.

Are the struts the same price in the US? Here they're $1200 and apparently only available through the dealer.

Depends how bad there worn. Just going over bumps with worn dampers isn't unsafe. Going over bumps during a turn, or making quick maneuvers at speed can be.

FWIW, there are A LOT of 10+ year old vehicles on the road, with completely wasted dampers.

I'm sure, but that doesn't mean that it's safe to do so. So shocks = dampers = struts, is that right?

No, not safe (not that the car's going to go flying off the road if you hit a pot hole...), just an observation. And the more suspension travel/less spring rate, the more unpredictable and floaty the vehicle will be.

Shocks and struts are dampers. They damp body motion.

BTW it seems to me, in hindsight, that the mechanic at the dealership whom I mentioned in the first post in this thread, correctly told me not to put any more $$ into this car after all. I now see what he means.

Well, worn dampers is hardly a reason not to put more money into a car. The problem is, it's a high end car, the MRC replacements are expensive, and they happened to fail at a time when the car wasn't worth all that much anymore.

Like we say all the time, the maintenance costs reflect the new car price, not the used car lot price. The used price of these cars is low enough that buyers think they can have a high end car, for the price of a 5 year old basic family sedan..... then something needs attention.

If you don't have a spare $5-6K sitting around it is.

Oh, definitely. That's what I mean. The purchase price is deceiving. You can get all 4 WAY cheaper than that though. The struts are ~$550 each on Amazon.

Sorry MC not sure I understand what you mean.... "all 4 way cheaper than that then."

I guess the bottom line, is that I would like to know what others would do in the same situation, meaning not having the $$ to replace the struts and tires to make the car better. Should I try to sell it for $3K or more, or let it sit in the garage not driven until I can afford the repairs? I'm nervous driving it now.

Canadian Black Book lists the price of private sale for this car with this mileage at $6,995 (average price). I don't know what that means in terms of condition or repairs done/needed, however. I have looked on autotrader, kijiji and craigslist and see them in the $2500-$3500 range, which is so low but I might just do it if I can sell it.

Kicker is, your Canadian import problems for new parts hurt mightily. Know anyone across from you that could send struts and shocks as "automotive parts returned for repair" ?

Re: Outcome of dealer service visit today re: steering wheel shake

Submariner, yes in fact I do. It's funny, most packages I buy from the US via eBay (for example, the spoiler I just got from CarID) come through without being stopped for duty (using USPS, FedEx or UPS). But sometimes they do, I don't know the rhyme or reason for how they decide. So I could buy $2-3K worth of parts from the US and make it here without paying tax or duty, which would be amazing and doable for me, but I can't be sure.

MC, are the $550 ones you're talking about OEM GM parts (I think from what you said earlier there are no aftermarket struts for the F55)?

Yes, they're genuine parts. The Amazon price varies, but it's usually around there.

    I think I found one: http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-580-24...1&s=automotive

As a test, I added 4 of them to my shopping cart and started the checkout process to see how much it would add for shipping. $175 shipping (for 4 of them), $475 deposit for import fees, coming to a grand total of $2883 (US), meaning around $2950 CA right now.

Remember, you only have 2 struts. There are shocks in the rear.

There may also be different part numbers for each side.
