Possible cracked block/head, blown head gasket?

I'm looking into buying a 1999 Eldorado, 124k miles, the interior is pretty good, the outside is great except the rear driver side panel has some cracking to it, maybe the paint. The problem is the car has coolant mixed with the oil, and it's leaking the mix as well. The owner said someone told them it was a cracked block. I was curious if it could be something else? I've heard that head gaskets can leak externally, and usually when a block is leaking coolant it's just the water jacket that's cracked. It could even be a blown headgasket and a cracked block which combined produce the symptoms it has. I was curious for anyone else's thoughts on the matter, and if they've heard of one of these northstar engines both having coolant mixed with the oil and having the mixture leak out. The leak seems to be coming from the firewall side of the engine

Cracked block and or heads are not very common and as mentioned, the Northstar almost never mixes coolant in the oil when a HG fails and they do not leak externally. Might be a ruptured oil cooler in the radiator side tank. If that's the case, I'd expect to see oil in the coolant as well.

I didn't get a chance to check the coolant reservoir while I was there but that'd be better than having to replace the headgaskets. I also didn't get a very good look underneath because the car wasn't on ramps or anything but it looked like it was leaking the oil/coolant mix down from the firewall side of the engine and dripping off of the oil pan. I checked the heater core hoses and it didn't look like there were any holes or cracks for it to spray onto the back of the engine.

Are you seeing this oil/coolant mix on the dipstick?

You are seeing an oil/coolant mix on the tip of the dipstick when you pull it, not on the handle? When you say on the filler cap, you mean on the inside of the cap? Just want to be sure we are on the same frequency.

Yeah, on the tip of the dipstick and on the inside of the cap.

Re: Possible cracked block/head, blown head gasket?

124k miles, the leather is cracking, no open rips or tears yet, missing stereo, cracks in the rear driver side exterior. Plus he wants $850 for it. I'd have been willing to drop the cradle and all that to change the head gaskets but having to replace the entire engine is something I don't have the time or resources to do. I'll probably pass because there are a few recently listed Cadillacs with 100k miles or less that are in much better condition for $1000-$1500. One wont start, one needs a catalytic converter, and the last they say needs a head gasket. Thanks for all the help and all the information.
