Brake Light in Dash Stays on

car is a 89 Eldorado Barritz . brakes work fine and fluid level is ok.

i believe the park brake got set after someone else drove it , and now brake light stays on in the dash.

i got under dash and sprayed lube on parts and actuated it several times.....

    but light stays on.

also can't find the switch ......

    any suggestions ?

Vacuum release ??? or electric release ? There should be an emergency parking brake release tab up in the mechanism - either owner's manual or GM shop manual. Crawl in there with a flashlight - there should be a microswitch somewhere on top of/close to the parking brake pedal arm.

There is a manual release to the right of the pedal. lift up the pedal with one hand while pulling back on the release. Not using the parking brake eventually seizes up the pistons in the rear calipers. Could also be a parking brake cable adjustment which would allow slack in the release. Too much slack and the pedal wont fully release. If I recall an 89 requires you to pump the pedal at least 3 times to set it. If on the 3rd pump, the pedal is close to the floor, it either needs adjustment or rear calipers.

its a vacum release, and the calipers are not sticking ...yet, car feels free in neutral when i release brake.

it is the type you pump up, and does take more than 3 to get pedal real firm

i'll have to look harder for the micro switch, of coarse i was looking for something bigger and more obvious

ill try a cable adjustment first, there's a bit of slack in cable under dash as i was flexing it to try and get more recoil but not enough hands to do it.

thanks for all the help, its my moms car and she really loves it, ill try to keep it working good for her

I am not 100% positive about this but it's worth a try. First thing does the brake pedal feel low when stopping? I am talking about the regular brake pedal used while driving. If I remember correctly this system uses a ratcheting system inside the rear calipers to adjust for pad wear and if you don't use the parking brake excess clearance will result. Try applying and releasing the parking brake several times {like 30} and then see if the parking brake pedal returns to the top when released any firmer. If not then check cable adjustment and light switch. Might Work!

To adjust the parking brake, the rear of the car needs to be on jack stands and the rear wheels off! You adjust the cable till the lever on the rear caliper JUST! starts to move forward, then relax the cable adjustment.
