They are indeed a money pit. Best money I have spend on a N* Eldo was my 1998 $650 gamble. Driven it almost 20k miles with no problems, but at the first sign of trouble I am going to push it off a cliff or into a lake. Made the mistake of trying to get into a project ETC. Have not had time to mess with it since last summer. Wish I had never seen that thing.

Depending on the driver the shifter could be from a car with less than $40K on it.
A female driver (using all sort of lotions) or a person that drives with one hand of the shifter will cause that.
I am not concerned about the mileage, I am concerned about the elephant in the room.
    The airbag was REPLACED!!!!

    Regarding the pool:
4 years ago 95'-'96 were the worst for HG then '97 were close.
3 years ago '97 was the worst year for the HG
2 years ago '97 and '98 were kind of at par but progressively '98 went up.
1 year ago '98 was the bad year and '99 cars were getting there.
Now the worst 2 years are '98 and '99.
Do you want to guess what production year is the worst in 1 year from now?

What that pool tells is what year is the most prone now to have issue (and that’s because statistically the car get to a certain mileage) and YET the car is still valuable enough to be fixed.
Sure the issue is in '03 and newer cars too but statistically the car don't have enough mileage accumulated, if it happens it happens in few cars.
Sure the '97 and older cars still have here and there HG issues as some of the few lower mileage car (from 2-3 years ago) now get up there. However the owners my not fix the car anymore, but the cars become more rare by now.

HG is not nearly as common as is famous and debated, however is MORE COMMON in the cars for sale. Everybody looks to pass the issue to a sucker.
What somebody kicking tires should pay attention is the suspension, a set of OEM struts is more expensive than a HG job. Do expect to replace the Struts/Shocks past 100K.
This is not a car for an 18 y.o. for sure, it won't have the financial resources to own it.

Hey there, MC! Indeed it has. My life has changed 100% over the past year. New career, no time, but still too many cars. Not sure I'll ever find time to finish the black ETC, but the cheapy '98 is doing great.

Wow! harsh words.... My ETC is a 93, had NUMEROUS issues and I purchased it for 750.00 in running condition with 98K on it.

I'm down to my last 2 items to repair (charge the a/c and replace the rear accelerometers)

I've got less than 2K in the car including purchase price and I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world....

AND being 1 of 1 (due to the custom ordered interior) I plan on keeping this for quite a while...

Thanks for all the attention, guys. Still around for now, Vincent but not much time for car stuff lately. You are right, Orconn. New job, no free time.
