    Considering buying a 2002 STS

    Hi!

Some of you members might remember my, kind of stressed out, post on a 1999 sts with failing IPC and a load of DTC's.

Now that one's returned I've set my eye on a 2002 sts, would you guys be so kind as to tell me what I should be aware of on models of this particulair year.

I would love to get my facts straight as per I don't want to repeat what happened with the other car

    Thanks in advance!

    Greetings from overseas,
    Dennis

Re: Considering on buying an 2002 STS

It's all in skrillions of threads in here, Discussions, and Northstar Performance (Engines). Know that the 2002.5 STS (made on or after 01/15/02) has the new Magnetic Ride Control suspension - more reliable and somewhat less expensive to repair/maintain than the obsolete CVRSS system it replaced.

The 2002 is a somewhat different car from the 1999....... beginning with the engine redesign.

Overall, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference, physically, from a glance. ANY used car, particularly one as sophisticated as the 2002 $57,000 STS, will have its quirks and nightmares. You gotta pay to play.

Ofcourse I understand, but I meant more like do these years have the same HG faillures and do these models have like canbus system? Unlike the 99 model
Also are these more likely to have bad grounds aswell?

Or are their certain flaws which the 2002 models have?

Re: Considering buying a 2002 STS

As posted, it's all in here. Head gasket = cylinder block bolt hole thread failure. Much less in 2000, less in 2002 (?), less in late 2003/4.

Never had a bad ground in my 2002.5........... but I tinker: Change the taillight bulbs - might as well clean the grounds, etc., etc.

Dead nuts faithful car and I drive the snot out of it when the spirit moves me. Even at my age I still qualify for "test & tune" runs at Cecil County Dragway.

"Certain flaws" ??? Not that I am aware of - every car in every model from every manufacturer has its ups and downs.

You're looking for an 11 year old USED car. Unless you find one stored in granny's garage for 10.8 years, not one will be perfect.
