My guess would be the a faulty voltage regulator or a very very weak battery.

So the high voltage is while driving?

Yes, or while running the car at a full stop in park.

    Sounds like a regulator.

16+ volts is DRAMATIC - that's high enough to start hurting electronics -

like Ranger said - the regulator - in the alternator - is NOT doing it's job -

I wouldn't continue running it in that condition -

Replace the alternator with a Delco rebuilt unless you want to replace it again this coming year. And I agree, running this car in this condition WILL damage electronics, blow out head and taillight bulbs, damage the new battery and generally wreak havoc with the whole electrical system.

Check your DIM fuse in the rear fuse panel under the seat. Its a 10A fuse, and if it blows or is removed the alternator loses its reference voltage an goes to full charging voltage which can approach 16V on the dash display (they are notoriously innacurate) which may only be 15.5V at the battery.

Holy crap-o-lee! A new alternator will cost me nearly $300!! What a rip off. Also, the previous owner drove it with this message for about six months and no lights or electronics broke...

you are driving a car that originally sold for $40,000+ dollars -
the cost of maintenance and repairs will reflect that price -
NOT the couple/few thousand it is worth today -

you can get a reman REMY from RockAuto.com for $135 -

amazon has a delco reman for $198 -
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new
    ------------------------

we have offered our best advise - replace the alternator -
if you feel comfortable driving it like it is - that's your choice - and a gamble -
you might drive it in this condition for years and never have a problem -
OR - you could start it tomorrow morning and blow every light bulb - and module on the car -

one member suggests that the actual voltage might not as high as the DIC reports -
and claims "they are notoriously innacurate" -

I find the opposite to be true - that the reported voltage is very accurate -
at least it is on both of my Cadillacs -

you could use a DVOM to verify the actual output -

What has he got to loose checking the fuse? If it's a fuse buy a lottery ticket! And I agree with basscatt, If you want a 75.00 alternator buy a 80's Chevy! This alternator is a hi output unit required on a Cadillac.

Re: 2000 STS Battery Voltage High

My DIC was reporting battery voltage greater than 16.0V, it was 15.1V at the battery terminal, and at the alternator output terminal as measured by a VOM. Gauge was up around 16V. The voltage regulators in the alternators are limited to 15.1 at full output.

Do a search for my user name and 2000 STS not charging from 3 years ago. At the end of the 3 page thread there is a list of voltage regulator part numbers and a place where you can order them from, you can replace the VR for about 20 bucks if you are handy with a soldering iron. If your checking the fuse, its fuse number 38.
