Your owner's manual has a list of recommended fluids. "Recommended fluids and lubricants", in the Service and Maintenance chapter, just after the recommended interval section.

Just about any P/S fluid on the shelves at parts stores - read the label - "approved by GM" ????

Thank you Submariner. It helps. My 2001 STS owners manual says:

"To determine what kind of fluid to use, see
“Recommended Fluids and Lubricants” in the
    Maintenance Schedule booklet.

I am still trying to find this Maintenance Scheule Booklet if there is any free download.
    Thanks

Don't over analyze this. Like Sub said, any over the counter P/S fluid will work.

There is one wrinkle (although it's unlikely to matter much) - there is a special cold weather (where cold means below 20F regularly, IIRC) P/S fluid available from GM, it's probably just a lighter weight hydraulic fluid.

Re: what are power steering fluid specs for 2001 STS

Apparently this "Maintenance schedule booklet" was combined with the owner's manual after 2001, so here's the blurb from the 2002 owner's manual (same car as yours): "GM Power Steering Fluid (GM Part number 1052884 - 1 pint, 1050017 - 1 quart, or equivalent."

The "or equivalent" is the many brands of power steering fluid on the shelves of parts stores - if you want to fell all warm and fuzzy, find a bottle of the stuff that says "GM Approved".

Re: what are power steering fluid specs for 2001 STS

Is there any link how to replace power steering fluid. I read a procedure in some google site that says " Remove the return hose from power steering reservoir. I see 2 hoses, one is metallic pipe, the other is rubber pipe connected to the reservoir on this STS 2001. The rubber one seems going straight to the bottom of steering column direction. Which one is the return hose. Is it the rubber one?

    Thanks
    John

The return line snakes around from the driver's end of the engine, across the front of the drivetrain cradle (cooler loop there), and up the front (passenger end) of the engine to the reservoir.

Remove the return hose from power steering reservoir
or just use a turkey baster -
suck out what you can from the reservior -
and top it back off -

do this a few times over a short period of time -
and most of the fluid will be replaced -

Why do you want to replace the P/S fluid?

Re: what are power steering fluid specs for 2001 STS

    Ranger,

About a few months ago, I made a mistake in dark that I added engine oil in power steering reservoir. Before starting car, I realized my mistake and used turkey baster and removed fluid from reservoir. I think the fluid is contaminated and now would like to change.
Question, for power steering bleeding, I need to raise front of STS 2001 so that wheels move freely with steering wheel turning. Can I use a jack under frame in the center of car near front axle. Is it ok to raise car by putting jack under front frame or do you think it may harm car and I should put 2 jacks under the sides of car?

    Thanks
    John

You can lift it by the subframe.

a single floor jack in the center would work -
but it is NOT very stable or particularly safe -
especially if you are turning the wheels -

there is a MUCH easier way -

stack 2 pieces of cardboard - for each front wheel - and drive onto them -

now the tires are turning on the cardboard to cardboard contact -
rather than tire to pavement -

I know I'm gonna get beat up for this, but P/S fluid is simply hydraulic fluid (oil). If you sucked it out before starting the car I doubt you hurt anything. Draining and refilling certainly won't hurt anything, but I'm not really sure it's necessary.
