Help- alignment after intermediate shaft replacement?

    Hello everyone,

today I took my car into the shop to have the intermediate steering shaft and steering wheel position sensor replaced in my 03 STS. I purchased the parts from Chris and intended to do the repairs myself. I ended up with two issues- I didn't have the time, and I was too chicken to remove the steering column. I called a local dealer who has done some services for me and they said they could replace both for $260. Sounded ok to me.

I went and picked it up and drove off. When I got out of the drive way and down the road, I noticed that my steering wheel was now off by 30-40 degrees or so to the right. I drove it back and inquired upon this and they checked with the tech. The tech stated that he was sorry that he didn't test drive the car first, but that it seemed ok in the parking lot. They told me that the shaft looked different to him and that "it only goes on one way and it might be the wrong part, but I supplied it, so.......". They told me that an alignment might take care of it, but with the steering wheel off by that amount, it might not solve it.

I trust Chris, as he has been very helpful and knowledgeable for me and the rest of us (plus, he checked the part by my vin). I did check it myself as well, and that part number (25810450) is correct for my car. I also thought that this was an updated design, which would explain why it looked different.

So, does this sound like something that can be corrected with an alignment, or does this sound like something the tech screwed up? I don't have any issues with getting the car an alignment (even though I just did a few thousand miles ago), but if it isn't going to fix anything, I would rather not bother. I'm going to inquire with Chris as well, but I wanted to get opinions from all of you guys...I'm sure some of you have been here .

    Thanks once again,
    Dan

Re: Help- alignment after intermediate shaft replacement?

found this on ye old web

Important: The replacement steering intermediate shaft is physically different in appearance than the original. However, the vehicle's ride performance will not be affected. Replace the original concentric style steering shaft with P/N 26068295, a Double "D" design

Sounds like there may be a couple versions of the part, both acceptable. sounds like an installation issue.

I replaced mine about a month ago, the part looks very different, but it went in and is okay. Only thing is i never removed the steering column so maybe the your tech messed something up there.

One last thing 25810450 is the correct part. I ordered it from GMPartsDirect.

Re: Help- alignment after intermediate shaft replacement?

    Hey guys,

sorry I never replied back. I ended up talking to Chris for some advice and he said it sounded like an installation issue and that I should call the service manager at the dealership. I called and he was friendly and was perfectly willing to have me bring it in so they can check it out. I'm taking it back in tomorrow evening. They are going to double check the part, but they said that if it is something they did, they will make it right. Chris said that they have revised this part about 5 times! I guess they should be able to see that in their system.

I'll let you guys know how it all goes.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Maybe you should talk to sub or ranger about making a tech tip thread on replacing the intermediate steering shaft without removing the column or maybe i'm thinking about the steering wheel position sensor.maybe its different year to year?

So they took the part back out and put it next to another new shaft and found that the part was the correct part. They called the alignment shop they use and the shop said that the updated part required an alignment. Alignment done and the steering wheel is now straight and the steering is tighter. Glad to have it all done with.

Is it common for the intermediate shaft to clunk in cooler weather than on the summer
