    1979 Seville steering lock WOES

    G'day gentlemen;

    I have been a member for a few years as I gathered advice and help driving my 1999 de Ville around the USA . That car is stored there now in Oregon, awaiting our next trip/vacation summer 2013. BUT here in Australia I have a converted Right Hand Drive 79 Seville that has now developed a VERY bad problem.

    My car has the entire steering column from the firewall into the cabin moved to the right, so I believe the problem with the STUCK lock cylinder would be the same as if the car was Left Hand drive as original.

    The key position is frozen in the 'on' position, and the key can be removed or inserted at will. The wheel is NOT locked. The engine will not turn over.

    I have successfully removed parts including the steering wheel and got to the position where I can :

    "17. Insert a small, thin screwdriver into slot next to mounting screw boss, Fig.9-85. "

    BUT, I cannot do the next instruction:

    "Depress center of lock cylinder retaining tab with screwdriver and remove lock cylinder"

    These quotes are from the 1976 Seville shop manual that I have.

    Of course I think the problem is the stuck lock cylinder is rotated and the screwdriver will NOT engage this retaining tab.I have tried with real force to rotate the cylinder with the key and no luck.

    ANYONE ever had this problem before and found a solution?

    WOE is me, I cannot think now what to do!

    Remove the electrical ignition switch at the base of the steering column and see if the key can now be rotated in either direction.
