I have a 2001 Seville STS. I'll start by saying I've read the interchange thread. It said a 2000-2003 will work. I called a local yard on an 03 and they're telling me it's not interchangeable. I also read somewhere else where someone said 01-02 were interchangeable but not 03.
Additionally a Deville and Eldorado could be had with a 9 code like the STS. Would either of those cars have engines compatible with my car? And if so what years?
The 2000 - 2002 VIN 9 engines will swap between VIN 9 cars.
STS, ETC, and DTS in those years had the 300 hp/3.71 final drive calibrated engine.
SLS, ESC, Deville, DHS had the VIN Y/3.11 final drive calibration.
On the front right cylinder block pad there's a VIN derivative of the original car's serial number. That series of numbers will begin with L37 (VIN 9) or LD8 (VIN Y). The Engine ID tag on the front of the right cam cover will not give you the VIN or type - that's a build reference tag.
Take a look at the engine compatibility sticky thread down in Engines: Northstar performance. The glitch may be electronic or mechanical or some combination - not sure on that one.......... BUT because the STS continued essentially unchanged from 02/02 to 06/03 I would guess that the glitch is electronic.
STS (VIN 9) production ceased in 06/03 while SLS (VIN Y) continued into 12/03, so there is no "2004" STS but there are 2004 SLS (The "model year" begins sometime in August or so.)
