Scary ride - 2001 SLS broken steering rack mount

Wife and I were coming down a long hill, with a sweeping left-hand curve, when it felt like we were Ice Road Truckers.Instead of a slight steering wheel movement,I suddenly had to turn the wheel a quarter turn or so.At 55 mph this will get your attention.Short story got car on a lift('01 SLS) ,and found the steering rack had a broken attachment on the passenger side.
Has anyone had this situation? If so,what was repair like?I replaced the rack assembly on our '87 Seville without dropping the engine cradle, but this doesn't look likely here.
    Thanks ,Butch

Is not the first time I hear about a broken mount on the rack (various years).
The cradle is NOT needed to be dropped for such a repair.

I had the broken steering rack mount on the passenger side. It would trigger stability systems and I couldn't turn accurately.

The rear side cradle had to be lowered just enough to gain access to the steering rack. It doesn't have to be removed.

O K,what is the repair procedure? Does the rack have to be replaced?

Well I went ahead and dropped the sway bar links(they will need replacement),removed the heat shield, moved everything that was likely to be damaged, and removed the broken piece of the rack. After looking things over,I brought in my main go-to guy and had the part welded back on.It looked as if it had been broken on one side for awhile. After restoring all that I had removed,or moved all is good.

Can I ask what kind of signs this thing was exibiting before it came loose all the way?
My 03 STS makes a lot of clunking sounds when turning or going on the gravel. On the hwy it seems to "be hard to turn" as my wife puts it. If you have a slight curve in the road it is hard to make the car start to turn a little if that makes any sense. It is like one wheels turns just a fraction before the other one. It is a very strange feeling and I just had a dealer align it and road force balance the tires. I think it drives worse now then before they worked on it. It has a bad shake..(tire slightly out of round) they said.

After repairing the mount,we noticed a much improved directional stability. Before the total separation of the mount,it seemed to require a lot of steering correction.

That is exactly what mine does now! It it like it is "squirly" in the road. ie...can't stay in your lane easily.
How exactly can I check to see if mine is starting to break/crack or whatever. What do I look for?
Thanks so much for your replies!

Re: Scary ride - 2001 SLS broken steering rack mount

One of my rack bolts fell out in the driveway when I was backing out!

I noticed something was wrong with the steering, turned the wheel back and forth a couple times and heard the ping of steel hitting concrete.
Thankfully all I had to do was get it back in the right spot and torque both of them down (the other one was loose enough to let it jump out of the U notch)

Visually looking at it would be the only good and final answer.
