i have recently notice the following problems. all happening around the same time so perhaps they are related.
i have noticed that the headlights do not always turn on automatically. sometimes they turn correctly at night but then after a few minutes they shut off. i then have to turn them on manually. just now they turned on in the middle of the day. so this seems that it might be a bad headlight sensor. your thoughts.
next problem is the center console, radio buttons, hvac, ect do not light up anymore. the dim switch does not affect them. the instrument cluster is working fine.
This is a CLASIC ambient light sensor failure and yes the two are related. If the headlamps do turn on in manual mode then the fuses/relays are fine.
In the center of the defrost grille locate 2 small sensors. One is the sun load sensor (used for AC) and the other is for the ambient light (used for the headlamps and interior lights).
First make sure the sensors are clean, but probably that is not your problem as a dirty sensor will be triggered to believe is dark thus the headlamps/interior lights will be on all the time.
If the sensors are clean then make sure are still in place (sometimes the sensors fall down underneath the grille). Probably is not your problem either as if they fall down will be in a dark place thus turning your headlamps ON all the time (or almost all time).
The last is the malfunctioning light sensor, you will have to replace it and that is not expensive. If you are really on a tight budget you can find a used sensor (wreck yards) for probably less than $5.
Then there is always the possibility of a faulty DIM, but I would not go there yet.
ok i have cleaned the sensor with no change. turned car on, of course headlights come on, shined flashlight into sensor and no change. headlights did not go off. so it seams the sensor is bad. i have done several searches for part number of the sensor and cost, do you have any info on that?
