Which fuel pump is right one? 1997 SLS

i have to replace the pump in my 97 sls. on ebay there are alot of pumps for the car by different companies and they all say they fit my car. they dont all look the same but does that matter? which would you recommend and what should the cost be to replace it at a shop. i was told 725.00. is it that labor intensive? thank you guys.

Re: which fuel pump is right one?

The fuel pump module - if you do it yourself off the internet - is $175 or so from Rock Auto. The kicker is that a "shop" makes their salaries on retail sales markup and labor - for your car the entire fuel tank must be removed, worked on, and replaced. NO FUN, and the labor will eat you alive. That said, I would guess that $725 is a bit on the steep side for a local Mom&Pop shop. 3 hours labor plus the module would cover about $500 - $550. Of course, that does not cover anything extra like rotten fuel lines, gaskets, straps, bolts.

Fuel pump module: The pump, housing, fuel line connectors, gaskets, maybe upgrade wiring harness, new fuel level sender. Replacing the fuel pump only in a '97 is a guarantee that the fuel level sender will fail next month.

You would want to buy the best most expensive fuel pump (assembly) you can find. And that would be AcDelco.
You save $50 on the part and spend $700 to install it (many times).
    Your call.

If you're in RI, take a look at RockAuto. They have the Airtex (DELPHI Ultrapower, OEM) pump module for $180 - and that's everything assembled.

I think they're on Central time. During part of my time at the SubBase in New London I chased one of the Cardi girls (East Greenwich, Cardi Construction). Her grandfather was Ricco Cardi, the concrete man. Rather a tightly-knit Italian clan.

1997 SLS - maybe not the fuel pump thats bad?

i posted yesterday that i needed to replace the fuel pump in my 97 sls. thats what the technician told me. the problem i have is that i have to cycle the key a number of times(only in the morning) and sometimes it starts right away and sometimes i have to cycle it a few more times and it will start. what does that tell you? after it starts it runs great and will start right up anytime no matter how long it sits. just not overnight. thanks for any ideas

One possibility is fuel draining out of the rail/lines after the pump turns off. That could be caused by a faulty check valve in the pump assembly, but there are other possibilities. Did your mechanic check for a bad FPR or leaking injectors?

This really should have been posted in your fuel pump thread.

Merged the OP's two threads on the same recurring problem.

If I had married Maria Cardi I'd probably be the only Scotch-Irish multimillionaire in East Greenwich...........oh, well.

Your hard start - do some searching for VATS keys and ignition switches - if that key pellet is not read correctly, or if the contacts in the switch are going bad, the car will be murder to start every time.

Maybe that ^^^^ ....................Maybe N*Caddy and a couple of electrical gurus will see this.
