    '98 Eldorado Alternator Replacement

I just got done changing out an alternator on my '98 Eldorado today, and thought I would do a post to save someone else doing the same job some precious time. I had looked at some different posts on this forum for the alternator replacement prior to starting the job, and some stated the radiator had to be removed....not true. That is only true if you fail to discover there is a small "access cover" bolted to the bottom of the radiator support directly underneath the alternator. Remove the four bolts from the access cover, and you simply turn the alternator pulley side down, and drop it down through the access hole.

To make it much easier to get to one of the back bolts of the alternator, remove the passenger side cooling fan.
It only takes a few minutes to remove it, and it will save you a whole lot of time making it easier to get to the alternator. This also helps in the installation process, when you are holding the alternator with one hand while trying to start the bolts with the other hand.

Remove the battery, and it makes getting to the front bolts of the alternator much easier also. So, it isn't anywhere near as scary as it looks at a first glance. It does take some dexterity to remove and reinstall the alternator, but I am a senior citizen, so if I can do it most anyone else can do it.

I hope this is of help to someone, I didn't state the obvious items to remove, such as a "cover" on top of the radiator, and a splash guard (or whatever it is) on the bottom of the radiator. Any procedure that states you have to remove something else, or relocate oil lines etc. is incorrect. Only the battery, passenger side cooling fan, and access cover have to be removed.

    Re: '98 Eldorado Alternator Replacement

Yes, bbuffalo, thank you. I have significant mechanical experience so I seldom look for info except where specs are needed. I am well into senior status too and my 1998 Eldo alternator just failed at 107,000 miles. I had access to a lift so the job was easier than it might have been. After I got the alternator loose I discovered it would not drop through the access hole that I thought was made for its removal. So, I Googled the subject on my phone and found this thread. I then decided the lower alternator mounting bracket made of heavy aluminum and mounted to the block had to be unbolted from the block to enable clearance for the alternator to drop out. The fan does have to be out of the way as you said. If I had hands the size of a 10 year old I think it would have been an easier job. A 15MM ratchet type box wrench as well as swivel head sockets, 6", 12" extensions and a hinged head 3/8" ratchet, I think, were a minimum requirement. When installing the new alternator you have to hold it up out of the way while you install the lower aluminum mounting bracket mentioned above. I did not remove my battery but I did of course disconnect the ground cable. In the flat rate manual, this job is 3.5 hours. It took me 4.5 hours. In my opinion this is not a job for the average shade tree mechanic. By the way, double check your serpentine belt tracking after it is installed. I had to loosen and reposition mine on the crank shaft 3 times to get it right.
