2001 Seville coolant into the oil

Good Evening and thanks for reading.

I have a 2001 Seville STS that is dumping the coolant into the oil.
I read on another post by RANGER that a blown head gasket will not cause this problem.
    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadillac-seville-cadillac-eldorado-forum/245980-2001-seville-sts-blown-head-gaskets.html

    I
have all of the classic symptoms of what would be blown head gasket.
    Coolant level dropping without leaking.
"Oil" level rising on the dipstick.
Very steamy exhaust that smells sickly sweet.
Lots of pressure in COLD cooling system.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: 2001 Seville coolant into the oil

It's not that the oil/coolant mixing does NOT occur: it's not common, so it's usually not the first indicator of failed head gaskets in these engines..........BUT you seem to have an uncommon problem.

Your pressure in the coolant reservoir is telling - now you need to perform a cylinder block exhaust gas test. Either rent the system/buy the fluid at a large parts store or go here: www.sjdiscounttools.com/lis75500.html.

With your other indicators, if you choose to overhaul (not top overhaul) the engine, use head/cylinder block studs or Norm's inserts.

Some have had luck with products from:

    www.northstarperformance.com - www.huhnsolutions.com - www.carrollcustomcadillac.com

You should update your profile to show your car, year, engine, location. It makes diagnosis easier.

I agree. Not common at all, but you do have the classic symptoms.

ALSO common if the radiator has an internal crack and coolant find its way into the oil passages, and this IS a common issue.

Only if the car has an engine oil cooler, and unless his STS has the V03 HD cooling RPO, the car doesn't have one. Transmission fluid cooler leaks are more common.

thebigtomster, Look on the RPO (Regular Production Option) sticker under the spare tire cover - is there a code "V03" in the sequence ? If there is, then the car has HD cooling and an engine oil cooler, and that would be another place to investigate. 2 oil lines coming from the oil filter adapter and snaking around to the front, top and bottom, of the passenger side radiator end tank.

To find out what is built into your car, enter the VIN into the box in www.compnine.com .

Re: 2001 Seville coolant into the oil

There is no V03 on the RPO and it is not listed on www.compnine.com when I put my VIN in.
    Thanks.
It would have been much easier to fix that problem.

Ranger, Where's that oil filter adapter illustration - the one with the old O-rings and the new one-piece gasket ? It shows the adapter with and without V03.

EDIT - Thanks - It also looks like pre-2000 HD cooling was V92 while 2000 and later was V03

Post #8 shows the O ring seals (part #405) and post #13 shows the one piece plate seal (part #441).

My 2001 STS does not have the oil cooler.
    P{
I am going to start digging into it this weekend.
    Any advise or wisdom?

Re: 2001 Seville coolant into the oil

If you are truly getting engine oil in the coolant, you must have a catastrophic head bolt thread failure: The oil from the cam area drains back to the oil pan through 3 drain wells in each head, down through the block to the oil pan gasket seam. It is possible - possible - that one or more of those drains - which go through the head gaskets - are severely compromised.

    --------------------------------------
what are you going to "dig into"?

IF you do have coolant getting into the engine oil -
the oil will look like a nasty milkshake -

    does it?

if YES - it MUST be an internal problem -

rarely does this happen with the pulled head bolts -
failed head gasket problem - it could - but VERY - VERY rare -

but a cracked cylinder head or a cracked block
would be a much more common cause for mixing coolant in the oil -

about the only thing I would do would be a BLOCK TEST -

this would simply verify you DO have exhaust gasses in the coolant -

so the MINIMUM would be the head gasket/block repair -
but you would also need to have the heads and block tested for cracks -
at an additional expense - over and above the usual head gasket repair -

Yep ^^^^ Coolant in the oil makes everything inside the engine look like chocolate mousse or one hell of a latte'.
