1999 STS | No drivers side controls

Attempted to look at some old threads but can't find what I am looking for.

I am currenty unable to control anything with my drivers side controls, Memory buttons, locks, windows.

The only thing I am able to do is unlock the doors; even this can only be done when I click the unlock button twice. The fact that the "double click" works every time seems to indicate this "feature" was done by design.

I will follow up in five minute with all codes.

U1170 - CURRENT - Loss of Driver Door Switch Asm Serial Data

Very, very likely that the driver door window/mirror cluster is bad. If you want to verify, remove it (there are tabs at front and rear) and disconnect the large (20 pin) connector. Check for ground at the black/white wire of the connector (pin 4) and for battery positive voltage on both orange wires at pins 11 and 12. (I think these should always be hot, but if in doubt have the ignition switch "on".) If things check out then replace the switch.

Where would these connections ground? I will check for voltage later today. First I would like to see if ground is clean at the end. I just removed my intake manifold as well as my coolant overflow tank doing other things and then this happens right away. The timing makes me hope I did this.

Re: 1999 STS | No drivers side controls

I'm not looking at the FSM right now but since there's a grounding point underneath the driver door sill I'd say it was there. Those connections ground other things as well, so if it were the problem you would likely have a lot more things out.

The driver door window/mirror switch is a rather common trouble spot as it's quite susceptible to dirt, debris and liquids.

I have access to a used replacement from a 99 STS being parted out in my area. What do I need to ensure that it is compatible?

    Color

I'm almost positive that the switches from even the last of the Sevilles with express window up are compatible.

I wasnt sure if there would be potential serial number issues. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1999 STS | No drivers side controls

Just checked the twenty pin connector. Only pin 11 carries a current. I get nothing on pin 12. The large 4 pin connector carries a current and it also is a complete circuit, so there is a ground.

What is the source for the second orange wire (pin 12)?

Could be my clumsy hands but I seem unable to show a circuit when touching pin 11 to Ground pin 4.

Re: 1999 STS | No drivers side controls

Uh oh! I missed a step and was looking at the wrong connector end view.

First check for continuity on the tan/white wire (pin 15) on the black, 20-pin connector in the LF DOOR MODULE and the same tan/white wire at pin 10 of the connector to the LF POWER WINDOW SWITCH! If no continuity, then carefully check and clean the connections. If you find continuity then,

check for power between the black/white wire (pin 1) and the orange wire (pin 9) of the WINDOW SWITCH. Again, the key may need to be in the "on" position--I'm not sure. If you find power then replace the switch.

I was having you check for ground and power in the wrong connector! Sorry!

Re: 1999 STS | No drivers side controls

Got in the car this morning to go to work. As a reflex I pressed my window button and to my surprise it worked. 3 days of no response and no response after I took it out and put in back in last night. Nice to have it work again, but very annoying that it starts working by itself.

More to follow I am sure.......

Id suggest that you may have a bad connection in the body harness connector near the coolant recovery tank. A bad connection on a purple wire in that connector will give you those problems.

Re: 1999 STS | No drivers side controls

There we go. That is definitely the problem. I had a coolant leak so I removed the tank and I noticed the connector under there was rust off the bolt and the harness was dirty and very wet. I will give it a cleaning and once over when I replace the coolant recovery tank on the weekend.

I knew there had to be a relation.

Re: 1999 STS | No drivers side controls

    Confirmed.

Controls stopped working. I went and wiggled the purple wire and viola!

Where would I find diagrams for the wiring for future reference? I seem to have a lot of issues with grounding and dirty connectors.
