Oil filter is readily accessible when you get under the car.

If you are asking for locations to get new oil filters, all the auto parts stores, even walmarts have it, just don't use Fram.

If you mean the Wix filter, I believe that is either a Napa brand or available at Napa. Not sure what is wrong with the 61e though. I think I have one in my car now.

Yes I was referring to the purchase. I just bought K&N today. Only Napa carries Wix around here. Research tells me my choice was adequate. Possibly overkill. But I'm sure there's a lot of sediment possibly in there after 153K miles. Damn! I bought a $21 fog light bulb! And the damn labor to put the thing in is 2hrs. U gotta take the damn front of the freakin car apart to change ONE damn light bulb! What the HELL? And my headlight covers are heavily oxidized. That shit in the auto parts store doesn't work. I can run with my brights and no one will ever notice u less they realize it's the middle lights instead of the outside ones. Not because of the brightness.

2 hours for fog lights? It's just accessible if you remove the lower splash shield.. 10 minutes top.

Good to hear you were able to fix the coolant flow problem. I have used the 3M headlight restorer kit on my STS headlights and it works very well.

Ranger the 61e is a E-core filter it has a plastic cage that replaces the inner metal tube.

I had a oil shut down warning on my 06DTS this summer I replaced the 61e with a purolator no problems since.

I think the walmart filters are E-core.mike

I have a 2000 which has the throttle body heater integral to the crossover manifold, and the purge line runs straight from the hollow bolt to the surge tank. I had a 97 before which has the same purge setup as his 99 but didn't remember the exact path of the purge line. I came back and corrected the info, before anyone went out and did alot of work for nothing.

I'm trying ow to figure whether to just payoff this car ($2000) and buy this 2003 offered by Bianco Auto Sales in NY or continue to make payments on this one and gradually try to fix it up. The 2003 has only 55K miles and a great price.

Interesting. 4 of the 6 filters on my shelf are E's. I think the non E's are going to get harder to find. Wonder why GM would switch if they are inferior?

We switched to the pf61e when GM superseded the pf61 with it.

That was well over a year ago - maybe even two years.

We have yet to have a single oil filter related problem.

Also, it's not just the 61, many of the filters have switched to the E series.

Hello everyone. I noticed another identical thread as this one that I started a while ago. Is there a way to combine the two? Maybe the person meant to add to this one.

The reason is, my wallet was saved by my friends (even some of U I can tell DON'T like me as well) in this forum. I am SO grateful. And now, after ALL this damn sweat equity, I can also help others.

Posts my new Avatar of my beauty a few moments ago. We're on the way to the auction. It looks like the day I got it. Gonna see what it'll bring tomorrow (Thursday).

When I bought it I never saw the carcass report. And truthfully, I've never seen one. And as far as I know, it will only contain what one would report right? So seems like a waste. But I don't know.

Drove it for another 2 hours last nite, and sat and idled for 45 minutes while I vacuumed and detailed the inside (and sucked the water out of the spare tire cavity). And now I'm pulling out headed for the Indianapolis auction. No hearing problems. Still puts out a TON of steam at stoplights but its. OT running hot at all. I guess I could still have a HG problem.

Thanks again for all your help people.

    Re: 99 STS Running Hot

they replaced it with the 61E

before the 61 it was a 58, before that, it was something else

part numbers get changed for various reasons

could be an actual change in the part physically
could be a change in the manufacturer/supplier
could be for some unknown reason GM just want's to change the number

if I had to guess I would say that these E filters were proven/tested to be just as good as their predecessors but cheaper to manufacture
